No sound form NPCs

Post » Sun Apr 17, 2011 7:18 am

I just got Fallout 3 New Vegas, and it looks amazing so far. The problem is is that for some reason, I can't hear any sound from NPCs during any conversation (or when I'm walking by). I tried the strategy mentioned in the sticky (Read before your post), but it didn't do anything. I attached my DXDIAG, if it helps. Thanks in advance.

I noticed that npc sounds don't stop if radio is playing, you could give it a try.

I had the same problem with win7..

I went into control panel and changed the sound device to play 24-bit audio and it fixed the problem..

you might try this and see if it works for you...

Thanks for the suggestion, but nothing doing. Man, it seems like everyone has a solution that works for them on this problem, except me.

honestly, there's so much going on with this game its hard to tell..... At times you fix one thing the other gets broken and vice versa. with me my problem is about the same I get this stuttering when buying stuff from the npc once I accept you hear the music or voice in a constant loop. then either 2 things happen it crashes or it takes for every to save.
I don't know......they need to come out with a patch soon or something its getting kinda boring doing all these tweaks to get the game to work

The voice files are .ogg files, you are probably missing the DirectShow codec for OGG files.

Go to the http://www.vorbis.com/, click the proper platform button (for Windows for example) and download and install the OGG codec. This should fix the problem.

I have no sound from NPC's also.

I have switched my sound from 16bit to 24bit, that didn't work.
I have associated Windows Media Player with .ogg files, that didn't work.
I have installed the .ogg codec as you suggested, that didn't work.
I tried turning on the radio, that didn't work.
My sound driver is up-to-date, such as it is (it's onboard MB sound)
I get all of the other sounds in the game... dogs barking, guns blasting, etc. Just no NPC voices.

Windows7 64bit on a i7 920 quad-core, Realtek High-definition audio.

Remove any and all 3rd party codexs pack. Codexs packs are always number one on my hit list when sound issues arise.

Scouring the internet to the far, dark corners, I found a translated page on google that fixed the problem for me.

I've had Realtek Audio Manager set my speakers to 5.1 configuration for a long time. But the post I found said, set your speakers to "stereo" or "2-speaker" configuration, and their NPC voices started working for them.

So I went into Realtek Audio Manger and set my speakers to stereo, went back into FNV and ta-da, now my NPC's have voices.

DUMB!!!! But it works!!!

It's kinda funny and probably more than a little bit odd, but yesterday I tried updating my sound card
drivers to the newest ones in the hopes that it might make the sound issues better, I have a sound
card that supports dolby 5.1 - 7.1, as I was a bit disappointed I couldn't use the surround speakers
I have had set up for the past couple of years...

Interestingly enough the driver update completely hosed the sound on FONV and I had to change
the speaker settings to stereo to get it to work again so I could hear all the sounds... lol
in other words; the driver update was a total waste of time since it only made things worse..

oh man, this is a total... well, you know -

Hooray!

I experienced the very same sound lag in fullscreen mode. Apart from that my hotkeys became disabled!
Sound(and hotkey pressing) would kick in when pressing ESC to menu or entering Pipboy.

Changed FalloutNV.exe and FalloutNVLauncher.exe compatibility to win98 and voilá - problem solved for me!

I have the same problem but for me all sounds are lagging behind.

If I have been in a fight and/or using vats, some time after my game freeze and all sound came allmost at the same time, or in rapid speed.
After the game runs smooth again except the sound.

I have tried every thing on the net i can find but nothing works. I dont have a top notc computer and i am sill amaced that i can run the game smooth.

In some quest that requier evesdropping or i need to listen to someone, (not in the dialouge) i need to press ESC and back, then i can hear the npc talking.

Thanks for all the help, but I tried each and every one of your tips, but I still have the same problem. After watching a few you-tube videos, I realized what I'm misisng out on. For me, the voices are a big part of the immersion and enjoyment of the game. I mean I'm not getting nearly as into the missions in this one as I was in Fallout 3, and I think the sound is the difference.

Most people here seem to have realtek audio where I have conexant. Maybe that's why we have different problems causing the lack of voices.

Is there any way on earth you could spend say 124.44 on a headset?
If so this may be a viable option plus getting a good 7.1 virtual surround sound headset. It will also take load off your cpu since you have onboard sound on your notebook.
http://www.amazon.com/Razer-Megalodon-Surround-Gaming-Headset/dp/B002EVPBH0

its what I am using only ran into issues in SC II with them but that was with 5.1/7.1 surround sound and even people with sound cards in their rigs that this supports had to turn down to 2 speakers to get it to work... I hate realtek and am not a big fan of creative labs's drivers.... Since I got the firmware update on this headset its ran great. You have to keep in mind your on a notebook right? You may never get support until you do something like this to bypass your systems onboard sound. Developers dont really care about taking care of you notebook guys. Its desktop or bus... with them

Any of you running notebooks with audio issues I HIGHLY suggest this since most of you are using the notebooks onboard sound many onboard sound chips are not supported by game developers. Best solution a NAMED headset/usb sound card to handle your audio for games, a company like Razer is supported by game developers. So a headset like that might be your best choice. I would personally avoid creative labs headsets like this just because of bad drivers they are infamous for...
