PC speakers

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 6:52 am

For Christmas I'm getting some speakers for my computer. I've never bought any before, having just used earphones since.

I want to know what speakers you guys think are decent, providing quality sound. Not the big surround speakers, just the type you'd sit on your desktop, and preferably under £70.

For that much you aren't getting great speakers. They won't be of the quality you will want to listen to music through.

What do you plan to do with them?

I realize you can't use newegg but something like that is your best bet for your price range if you don't expect to have great sound quality for music and things of that sort. It will do just fine if you want to use your computer for movies/play video games without a headset and things of that sort.

I won't be listening to music with them, I have headphones for that. I just want to use them for general videogaming without being the only person in the room that can hear it.

I'm not really an audiophile, I just want to make sure the sound isn't tinny or anything.

Hmm, Play.com has those for £70, they might be a safe bet.

After some looking around this would be cheaper and about the same sound quality. I'm not sure about the company though, I have no experience with them. Comes with some fancy stuff like a remote too so it might be worth looking into.

When I asked a similar question a while back, I was advised to hook my PC up to a regular hi-fi amplifier instead of getting dedicated PC speakers as it would probably be cheaper and better. I've yet to put it to the test, but I wouldn't be surprised; what I do know is that my Creative 2.1 "I-Trigue" speaker system I use at present has about the worst sound quality I've ever heard. It's crap. I'd avoid it at all costs.

I have Cambridge Soundworks Speakers & Sub. Not sure of the model/price as I bought them ages (like 7-8 years) ago. They're phenomenal.

Don't they tend to be a bit large? I don't have all that much space available.

I think Logitech makes pretty good speakers, I got http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121006 about three years ago for $77 and they sound great. The new ones they sell are kinda weird looking though...

Don't scrimp on speakers. Good speakers make all the difference. Logitech are probably the best bang for your buck.

I like Bose. I have http://www.bose.co.uk/GB/en/home-and-personal-audio/digital-music-solutions/computer-speakers/companion-2-speaker-system/ and they're awesome.

EDIT: I'm so flippin' tired I hit 'add reply' instead of 'insert link'

Second EDIT: I added a more appropriate link.

I've got a pair of harman/kardon hk206's on my desktop. For the price they can't be beat in sound. No sub, but that's what I've got my big system for. :hehe:

Bose make quality products but they also charge way, way too much for them. You can get better for cheaper in almost all cases.

I'd say go with the Logitech...but you could probably get a set of Roland MA-8 monitors for that price or cheaper, those little buggers rule. Nice deep cabinets and you can crank the bass in yo face.

That's the z313 model, which looks even better than my older z340 model.

I have Logitech, Z323. I think there the best bang for the buck. Great for video games and music. Price went down since I got them.

While I agree that they're a more expensive company, I have had many different speakers that were cheaper than the Bose that I have currently and the sound quality they had was nowhere near that of the Bose. These two little speakers are absolutely insane. Also every other system I've had before the Bose didn't last more than 2 years before the sound either stopped working or started to emit static. That said, $100 bucks for this sound system is reasonable considering the quality you receive.

Excellent speakers for general pc use. Been using my pair for almost eight years. You'll probably get a pair for $15-$20 USD.

I think I'll help myself to that recommendation, too; although I usually use my lovely Sennheiser headphones, the few times I do use speakers, I'm so fed up with the awful, muddy sound quality of this I-Trigue rubbish I've lumbered myself with. I'm inclined to just leave the latter at the top of the drive in the hope that somebody will steal it, though I expect I'll end up having to throw it away.

How's fatdog?

Now there's a name I haven't seen in a while... although I may have just been not paying attention, as usual.
