Spellcafting Brainstorm

Post » Tue Jul 10, 2012 7:46 am

A lot of people on these forums talk about how they want spell crafting to return to Skyrim, so I figured a thread working out what people want to see and what they don't want to see might be a good idea. Also, with any luck, it will further help bring Beth's attention to this matter.

For myself, I would like to see an actual crafting system, rather than paying to make your own spell like in previous games. I think that with the leaps and bounds that Skyrim has taken in terms of crafting, a spell crafting system that utilizes resources and is related to specific skills would be much more interesting in my opinion. I figure something similar to the Atronach forge, and maybe needing to know a base spell (eg: knowing flames unlocks other fire spells, etc).

Thoughts? Anybody have anything they would like to see?

Yeesh. I don't know about that. The only way Bethesda is going to add spell crafting is if Microsoft tells them to.

They just need to let us make scrolls. The negatives of them burning up after use and requiring things like paper and soul gems to create would ballance things out well enough. Add a special book that keeps say five scrolls from burning up and you'd have spellmaking, while at the same time still leaving the normal spell system open to things like spell combination.

Here's my idea. Each spell consists of two components - an effect and a form. You have to learn effects and forms from the spells you already know. For example, Fire Rune has the Fire Damage effect and the Rune form. Circle of Protection has the Turn Undead effect and the Circle form. So, if you know those two spells, you can create two more spells - Circle of Fire, and a Rune of Turn Undead. This is ignoring sliders to adjust the strength and duration of the spells.
