Stand-alone patch?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:12 am

Will there be a stand-alone patch? My main computer is having some problems connecting to the internet and as such have been forced to play off-line, making getting the patch that has been recently released, impossible. All I have able to get to the internet right now is my netbook which I am on right now.

The patch that was released was just a hotfix to fix things steam-related. There hasn't been a stand-alone patch release yet. At least that's what I gathered...

Not missing anything is an understatement. I don't think the steam hotfix actually did anything lol.

I would love to know as well, but I fear that Beth expects us to go through steam for the patches. though I really hope we won't have to.

Yeah... I always keep backups on discs of all the patches for any games i play, so not being able to with NV would be annoying. I mean, what if one day steam shuts down? No more patches to get back up to date after a reinstall?

We have just released an automatic update for the PC version of Fallout: New Vegas that resolves quest and scripting issues. Be sure to restart Steam to ensure the update is downloaded on your next launch of the game. We’re also working hard to make this update available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game as soon as possible, and will let you know as soon as we have the dates they’ll be up.

From http://bethblog.com/index.php/2010/10/20/updates-on-fallout-new-vegas/

Its more then hotfixes and steam fixes.

I really don't think they plan to release a stand alone patch for pc. What would be the point of using steam as DRM, the only DRM. And then allow people somehow not using steam (sic) to update the game?

For the people who:
1. Have piss poor IPS like me.
2. Want to have backup copies in the event that they can not obtain the patch from steam, like me
3. In the event that Steam is no longer available, the game is still playable and able to be fully patched.

Online distribution is only good so long as you have access to it, and that service is always there. DRMs are meant for the game, ive never heard of someone using it for patches.

It's Steamworks, patches will be delivered via Steam automatically when online... I do not recall ever seeing a standalone patch for a Steamworks title.

there are Some Kind of unofficial stand-alone patches for some steamworks games, made, possibly, by taking the modified files and putting them in an installer-type package, I Definitely Read it somewhere On the Web

it would be good if there were official ones for the people that were told that they could use the game offline

Yeah, it's kind of annoying. I like to keep several stages of patches, so that I can reinstall to the state that's needed (like, in FO3, when the one patch destroyed modding, being able to revert to an earlier one was nice. Ditto with other games that sometimes make large changes in patches - keeping Diablo 2 patches for various mods that need them, keeping Sacred 2 patches so that you can reinstall the "oooh, holiday events" patch, etc, etc, etc.)

It's also nice to have the patch files downloaded for games that you reinstall alot - I don't have much space on my PC partition, so I'm constantly deleting and reinstalling games. (Especially gamesas games, where I delete them for a clean install whenever I want to try a new mod setup). Having to download the patches each time.....

It's interesting that the PC (which was always promoted above closed-system things like Mac, "we can get into the guts", the modern replacement for tinkering with your hotrod) are becoming more closed and automated, so that you have less control.
