If I do not do any main quest other than what is required at start will this keep the dragons away or will they still attack?

Dragon attacks start after you fight the first dragon near Whiterun. As long as you don't do this part you won't see attacks. However, you can't finish the civil war questline if you dont' do this quest.

Another way to stop dragon attacks is to do the main quest up until the part where you're supposed to go to Kynesgrove with Delphine. Just tell her to go to Kynesgrove without you and from that point on, no dragons will attack until you continue the questline.

You won't see any dragons (except the one in Helgen) before you slay the one on the keep near Whiterun in the quest.

Exactly! After a while with out "fussin' " on my current character, I went "a what the fus" and go slew my first dragon! LOL I do like finding words and slaying dragons...

You can talk to him and you can go to Bleak Falls Barrow and get the Dragonstone for Farengar (although I wait to give it to him) when you are there getting the Golden Claw for Lucan, just don't go out to the tower in Whiterun and fight the first dragon.



Ya, there's this. After awhile I miss my shouts and go start the MQ to get dragons into the world so I can unlock the shouts. They are very useful against shouty draugr.
