There's several versions of mage...I think a Conjuror would be fun...focus on spells which create atronachs, raise dead, spirit wolves, etc. I think a destruction mage would be a little too close to bow usage i.e. fighting would be very similar with bow & arrow dodging...aiming...shooting...dodging...aiming...shooting. A Conjuror tactic is very different...always staying hidden and working on that next spell. The battle is more internal with managing magicka and selecting the right array of spells for the situation i.e. pop out a couple of spirit wolves to cause a distraction while you raise a comple of corpses to give you time to create a fire atronach or two to finish them off.
But, the opposite is also fun i.e. full Dragonplate Axe weilding dragon-killer. That's what I'm playing right now and it's a blast...especially with my two-handed skill where I am starting to decapitate and my stamina high enough to deliver 5 or 6 overhead power swings in a row. Quick-keys for the health & stamina potions so I can keep moving forward...plowing through upto a dozen bandits and undead in about 15 seconds. And, there's nothing more satisfying than climbing on top of a dragon's head and planting a double-headed Axe into his skill.
