You don't get a place of your own for a while.

Books give +3 skill, magazines +10, check the item description.

magazines will say +10 while books won't say anything. If you can remember some of the book names from FO3 that helps too.

Note:
Books give permanent +3 to skill, (or more depending on your choice of perks)
Magazines give a temporary +10 to skill (Lasts only a few minutes. More time can be had with the right perk)

Also there is a perk that increases books from +3 to +4 and magazines from +10 to +20
And another perk that extends the time duration of magazines by roughly 3 fold.

Soon as you finish the tutorial quest you can have a house and storage space picked out in 20 minutes inside Goodsprings. Scattered all over the map there is dozens of places to take over for yourself. Some even have nice touches like campfires, reloading benches and/or workbenches.

I was keeping everything at Lucky 38 until I did something bad, then loaded up my companions and left. Not sure where we're going to go now. Probably back to the shack in goodsprings.

no

Lead is from scrap metal or from different ammo like 5mm or 5.56 mm which you will need to use a reload bench to breakdown. I like to keep a cabinet or storage container just for the bullet components cases, powders, primers, metals like lead, aluminum, steel or copper otherwise it can be quite nuts to keep all the materials sorted. From scrap i believe you get lead and some steel, from electronics you get copper and lead, and from pots and pans you get steel and aluminum. This is from memory but i think i am close, but anyway i think you now got the gist of it. Good luck.
