STEAM client update causing potential problem

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:16 pm

Hi all,

Just a heads up to those that may be interested.

I had to go online with STEAM today to verify integretity of game cache after removing a mod that was causing problems and this all worked out fine except for one thing!

After verifying the integrity, I decide to go through the other Skyrim properties on steam and found that the 'UPDATES/Automatic updates' is frozen on 'Always keep this game up to date' and will not change (no drop down) - thus taking the option of not updating away from the user.

So, if this issue has potential to cause you a problem, be warned!

I had recieved notice of steam client update and have tried restarting PC just in case the issue was caused by a technical hiccup - the issue remains.

Now I know some of you will be baffled as to why anyone should not want to have auto updates switched on. I also know that for some, auto updating causes problems. If you are in the former group, please do not flame me as I am pointing this out to people in the latter group as information they may find useful. I would also like to point out that I know this is a Skyrim forum and not a STEAM forum but I also suspect that some readers will see this post that do not go to the STEAM forums.

Hopefully, STEAM will remedy this fault soon and save many users from update headaches.

Spoiler
One example of users badly affected by auto updates is those that use multi monitor fixes that get broken each time Beth updates Skyrim!

Update!

This issue seems to be caused by STEAM client not re-installing correctly after update. (STEAM initially reported update was complete.)

For the last twenty minutes or so, STEAM has been in a client update 'loop' on my PC!

I switched off PC as I was going to bed but remembered I needed to check my email so switched it back on. STEAM informed me that it was updating, again, and then asked me to restart STEAM. I restarted STEAM only to be informed the client was updating again - this cycled for a while and continued after two further PC shutdowns (proper shutdown / wait / start up) until it finally accepted that the STEAM client was up to date. I restarted PC (not shutdown - restart) and now STeam seems to be 'solid' and the issue of changing update prference for Skyrim seems fixed.

So ... I think the warning still stands - if only to tell those that are interested to triple check STEAM client updates and Skyrim preferences.

Thanks for reading. Hopefully this issue will not cause any real problems for anyone.

G'nite all.

Edit: To sleep, perchance to dream! Darn migraine! Just thought I'd pop in to ask the mods to feel free to lock this if needed. :)

This is why I leave steam in offline mode. I don't need it checking up on everything I do. I already regret letting it update once. Now it causes memory leaks so bad that after playing or using the CK I get a BSOD if I try to make my computer sleep. I won't bash steam since it allows me to play without my discs (which always end up lost or scratched) but I won't exactly sing praises about it either. I'm already dreading having to deal with another such gaming client for another title from another company...

thus taking the option of not updating away from the user.
You never had the option of stopping it from updating, only in offline mode can you do that. It's just worded poorly. It will either download an update as soon as it's available (default) or wait until you launch the game. There's no way to stop it from updating other than playing in offline mode.
