Steam Cloud Sync eating saves?

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 3:47 am

I'm curious; how does Steam Cloud Sync work when you have more savegames than fit in the alloted 50mb space?

The reason I'm wondering is that all my saves from yesterday have gone missing for no apparent reason. It's unlikelly that it's Steam Cloud Syncing gone haywire, but I would like to rule it out if possible.

Note: There's plenty of free space on the drive storing the saves, so it's not the bug/oversight were the game doesn't inform you that saving has failed due to insufficient drivespace.

You can rule out the Steam cloud, as there is no 50MB limit.

I had several hundred MB worth of saves stored in the cloud for a number of games, totaling upwards of 3GB.

It's allocated on a per game basis. Skyrim only has 50 MB allowed for files to be saved to the Steam Cloud while TF2 has something like 1 GB or something like that.

Though, I'm not sure if the Cloud wipes your old files on the physical drive or just on their servers. I don't use it for Skyrim since I only have 1 computer playing it.

Interesting, didn't know it was limited to 50MB, as I have almost 1GB stored for Oblivion.

At any rate, I have a couple GB in my save folder for Skyrim and nothing has ever been deleted by the cloud sync.

You can check by going to the Steam Properties window for a game/tool, clicking Updates, and looking at the very bottom where it talks about Cloud Sync. It'll tell you the amount and stuff.

I like to check my TF2 amount every now and then just for kicks. :P

I've come to the conclusion that it is the "saving silently fails when out of diskspace" bug/oversight after all. Looks like I must have forgotten to change the default virtual memory setting when I reinstalled the OS, so what looks like available diskspace is eaten up by the dynamically expanding virtual memory during gameplay.
