We'll have to wait. If it isn't available for pre-load by Saturday night, then we can start panicking. It would be nice to know if we are even going to be ABLE to preload at some point in time.

Being a veteran of both Steam Release and Retail Midnight Parties..........optimism dies.

Activation Syndrome probably will not hit this one, however, digital market will arive late. By a few hours, but meh.....single player game. We have time.

Gamestop especially will be a pain, though. Don't expect to get home until at least 3am without an :flamethrower:
Confirm your preorder line. Wait for midnight outside in the cold. Call in by arbitrary random number written on your slip. Clog at the counter because five people had the same number and only one had a collector's edition.....and they all claim it is THEM. Yeah.......bring your :flamethrower:

I went with Steam. Even if they release a bit late to give the stores their clog and grind time, you don't have to worry about anything with Steam. It just runs. You push a button and you play. Plus seriously.......caravan leather armor and a shiny shotgun to blow heads off with :foodndrink:

This isn't a Halo release! I went to a Fallout 3 midnight release and there were maybe 20 people there - in and out in like 10 minutes max. I don't expect this will be much bigger. GameStop does midnight release parties even when they don't have a huge number of reservations for a game. New Vegas seems to be doing pretty well, but you are not going to have anywhere near the kind of crowds you saw for Halo Reach or something like that.

i dont know how pc works. but cant you just get a disc copy?

same i remember for assassins creed 2 and left 4 dead 2 (both on the same night) maybe 4 people showed up :laugh: im expecting about the same maybe a bit more for this lol

For copy protection and other reasons, Fallout New Vegas on PC is tied to Steam as a Steamworks game. That means that every PC copy, regardless of where you bought it, will insist that Steam be installed on your computer and the game will install as if it's a Steam game. You have to be connected to the internet initially as well. All that buying a disk copy gains you is that you don't have to download all the files as they will install instead off out the disk. One of the downsides to being a Steamworks game is that the game will not work until Steam recognizes the game as being released and its up in the air at the moment as to when that will be. Right now Steam is counting down to a release time that is in the morning or mid-day (depending on what part of North America you are in) on the 19th. That means that even if you buy the PC version at midnight, you may not be able to play it until hours later. GStaff (one of the moderators here) said he is looking into whether that will be changing or not.

How this works is simple.

Steam purchase: Place Pre-order --> Wait --> Preload game --> wait a few more hours --> Valve transmits the decryption code at release --> Steam decrypts and installs --> Play!

Brick and Mortar 1: Place Pre-order --> Wait --> Receive game in mail --> Install from disc--> Wait a few more hours --> Valve transmits unlock code --> Steam decrypts and installs --> Play!

Brick and Mortar 2: Place Pre-order --> Wait --> Show up just before opening on release day --> Pick up game --> Install from disc--> Valve transmits unlock code --> Steam decrypts and installs --> Play!

Still not available to preload. Hope it pops up later tonight or tomorrow.

I'm good as long as it shows up on Sunday or Monday. I don't want to have to prompt a download when I get home from school and possibly not be able to play until 10.

True, but there is that initial surge of users that are downloading. Thats going to slow downloads some. As long as its downloaded and ready to unlock when I get home Tuesday. Monsters/Coffee and chips already purchased.

the unlock time for region 2 (by my calculations) is 7pm on Friday the 22nd

on the FONV page on steam there should be a countdown. just work out the time from there.

7pm..? hmmm... I would rather 7 AM, but I guess that gives me the chance to get RL stuff out of the way first and not slack off

"This game will unlock in approximately 1 week, and 1 hour"

So that is 7pm next Friday. A looooooong time....

That irks me slightly. Waiting until 5 hours before the start of the NEXT DAY to play a game that is physically buyable in the morning of the same, just because I'm using a download medium is crazy-logic.

Could we possibly have some wonderful common sense regarding that time, and at least make it mid-day GMT (+0) or something? It *is* a major release after all.

it's even crazier for me, because I have a DVD copy.. which means I have to wait 12 odd hours just to play something I have in my hand... go figure..

also, if you pre-order from game via royal mail you will get it a day early :flame:

Earlier today I sent an email to 2 "info" addies I found for Obsidian asking for clarification on the Steam unlock time for Europe, as between 6pm and 7pm BST is silly. I'm not holding my breath for a reply, but I'll post it if I get one.

This is my first time using Steam. Where do you guys go to find the info about unlock time? Also where would the pre-load button appear when it is available?

This release will be my first time using soap in over month. But I will not rest and go in the shower until i officially have the game delivered.

On the game's steam store page, it says "this game will unlock in X days, X hours."

The preload button should appear in your game library menu, under Fallout: New Vegas. Probably where the install button would be normally.

Correct. Also, if you're not seeing a pre-load button by now, restart Steam and it should be there.
