Look up digital distribution man, it's a lot better value for the developers. FIrst of all, all you need to make an online game is one copy of it, which you can copy a near infinite number of times at no expense to the developer who can cut out the middle-men like Gamestop or packaging companies, who make fortunes off soley being middle men. Steam allows you to download the game on as many computers as you want (for most titles anyways), which completely eliminates the need for a disk that can scratch or break.
Download times varry, sure, but what's a few extra minuites (or hours depending on how slow your computer and internet are) difference from the CD copy? Valve is an awesome company, who probably hold their fans in higher reguard than almost any developer; it's a dream to see two brilliant companies like Valve and Bethesda work together to produce this CK and the workshop. The only downfall I can see in the whole arrangement is that the digital pre-order copy for Skyrim was a hat for TF2 ( In comparason to a map? ... no thanks guys). And besides, what else could there be? Skyrim on Origin? Don't make me laugh. CDs and used-game salesmen? Time to start living in the present.
