Stupid Norms and Silly Bull

A bit unrelated but is the desire to put your hands in your pockets mainly a male thing? I ask because I think I'd feel very uncomfortable doing it but have no idea why....? Womens clothing tends not to have pockets (apart from jeans...) so is the tendancy to do it mainly for guys? And what does it mean?

Am confused now. :( Damnit OP you've got me THINKING!!

Don't get it either. I assume that the pocket thing is to keep you from falling on your face or doing anything funny with your hands, but I don't really see the point and never follow this rule. The hat thing is likely a remnant of some etiquette thing, and while I don't wear hats myself, I have no problem with hats indoors.

1. "Don't put your hands in your pockets!"

You might fall over and hurt yourself.
You might be concealing weapons.
It's an insult to the Sun God.

2. "Take off your hat when you're inside!"

You might be concealing weapons in your hat.
It's an insult to the Sun God.

Actually, Amun-Ra requires you to wear a hat.

See, what I do is make a grabbing motion at sneezers and then laugh say "haha, I got your soul, I got your soul" while doing a little jig.

I once tripped with my hands in my pockets.

Yeah, so did my friend. He lost a tooth.

Responding every time someone sneezes. I don't have a disease, and I'm not possessed, I don't need your blessing! :swear:

Actually, that's a reference to bubonic plague. One of the symptoms of The Black Death was sneezing, so it became customary to bless anyone who sneezed because they'd be dead soon.

The hats indoors thing: do most people who wear hats realise how stupid they look?

On a more serious note. Armpits are much warmer than pockets.

You know, I have something related to this topic and was going to start a thread, but I'm glad I don't have to. You see, I take a course in high school as an elective, which is for whatever reason called business. Essentially it's an introduction to information technology (learning to use such unfathomably advanced technology as...dare I say....MICROSOFT WORD 2010!!!!) Anyway, there I am sitting with my little booklet of instructions (I go to a weird ass school where teachers don't do much, instead we get booklets) and this booklet is telling me in hilariously detailed instructions how to format a table of contents with just the right amount of those little dots leading from the section title to the page number (the ones in restaurant menus...yeah those) And as I'm following the instructions it occurs to me that I could be doing pushups, or listening to metal, or wasting my time here at the forums or a million better things than learning how to add just the right amount of guide-me-dots to a table of contents. And I ask myself what is the need for this? What's the reason for all this [censored] formality, I mean they can read right? Why can't I just type up the text and hand the damned thing in? Essentially, it's not the fact that I wasted my evening that bothers me, it's that I'm baffled by the need for these idiotic little formalities.

1. It looks laid back, which isn't completely a bad thing depending on the scenario. School are places of formal education, thus you are expected to look formal in both dress code and manners. It could be considered bad manners to put your hands in your pockets because you look laid back and as if you don't care.
Have you ever been at a public school? Formal does not fit well in there... Where I'm from, teachers expect only a few things; that the students pay attention, do well in class, have as few days of absence as possible. Short of that, it almost doesn't matter.

2. I have a friend who wears his hat constantly inside and out, you don't do it, or shouldn't, for the same reason you don't on an umbrella in doors or wear a hood. It isn't raining inside so it serves no purpose in that scenario, the only other reason you should wear a hat indoors is if the place is freezing so you can keep your head/ears warm. If your hair is a mess, fix it yourself and stop being lazy and take some pride in your appearance instead of moaning about rules/tradition/formalities
Now, I understand what you're saying, and I get it. But does it really matter? If someone wears a hat inside, is it so fundamentally offensive and a grave violation? It's a piece of clothing, that shouldn't be of any concern either way. If your friend want to wear a hat inside, let him do it. He's not hurting anyone, and seeing as he is your friend, you already have some respect for him, and he for you. Are you going to burn a bridge because of a hat? Does this hat symbolize his depravity somehow? 'Cause I'm sure he probably just finds it comfortable or fashionable.

From now on, I'm going to wear my hat indoors while putting my hands in my pockets.
I already do, and it hasn't stopped me from getting a job, and thankfully I haven't ran into megalomaniacs of their own little space who think because they have a house that they need to make pointless and pedantic rules like taking one's hat off inside. Certainly I wouldn't bother being around this type of person so affixed on someone else's clothing to begin with.. they'd be better off inviting one of those clothing store mannequins instead which they can dress up any which way they subjectively feel like.

The last time I dealt with this kind of attitude was in high school, and let's just say that for all the individuality high school parades around for promoting, they certainly are in the business of social and behavioural engineering for all the wrong reasons.

Hi..

Megalomanic here.., with house actually.., how ya doin'...

Yeah.. funny thing actually about people and their houses... you won't believe it... I do the same... so do the neighbors I think.. pretty sure they do... you wouldn't want to know how they do things in Florida.. but uhm...,

my house, my rules. In the most pedantic fashion possible  <--(*)

know what I mean, Verne?

You know, the problem with that is they'll just stab you in the back when you turn around. Better to have the gun on your person before you threaten them with it.

I dunno, still sounds risky to me. What if they're quicker to the draw then you? Best option is to augment yourself so you can shoot CO2 lasers out of your eyes on demand.

Aye, but what if they have Cybernetic implants that allow them to make decisions and fire their eye lasers faster than you can? Best bet to use the force to reflect laser weaponry back at them.

Not in mah house kiddo..

two reason.. three actually.
1. Krav Maga since '95, USMC 'chokes and throws' since mid '80s, and aikido since I was seven.. the only people who can threaten me in my house bring big bazooka's and use them simultaneously, or there will be trouble.

edit
Being serious though, I was illustrating a point. Most people become rather uptight when it comes to people biding by their rules, whilst a guest in their house. They way third eye worded it it sounds like he has no respect for another persons property and house rules.. which is why I mentioned Florida. People will shoot you in Florida with that attitude..

Certainly, when you're a guest in someone's house, you're tacitly agreeing to follow their house rules, which is fine in principle.

I guess the question becomes why anyone would have rules such as removing your hat or keeping your hands out of your pockets.
I agree that a man's home is his castle, etc. and I agree with the principles involved, but why? Why on earth would someone wearing a hat in your house bother you?

Let's be honest here, the guy in the 2nd pic looks like a bit of a nob.

Yes but he looks like a professional nob.

I've never understood the hands in pocket=lazy thing either. But the explanations seem reasonable enough.
And I was always told that the sun doesn't shine inside, so there's no need for a hat. I don't mind people wearing hats inside, but I don't like wearing them myself (unless it's a beanie)
