Stuttering all of a sudden...

Post » Mon May 28, 2012 6:33 pm

Okay, here's the deal, I've been playing on Ultra everything (except High for shadows) and I've been getting around 60fps inside, and 30 to 45 outside). I was clearing this one dungeon, and once I got outside it started to lag so badly. I figured it was just the place because I had never been there, so I went back to Whiterun where I KNOW I don't lag, and the same thing happens. I tried disabling all of my mods and trying, nothing. I tried rebooting several times, nothing. I know neither my CPU nor my Crossfire GPU's are overheating. I don't get it! I also tried turning on VSync and it did not help. Thanks in advance.

What version are you using? If it's 1.4 same thing happened to me. Go back to 1.3. If not ignore my post.

Without knowing a single thing about your system, try this next time it happens:

Open the console in game
Type pcb
Press enter.

This will clear your VRAM. Without knowing your system I dunno if it will work, but it does zero harm so try it. It does sound like it'll fix your problem.

Sort of worked, but after a few fast travels the stuterring continued.

My spcs -

AMD 1055T - OCed @3.4Ghz
Crossfire HD Radeon 6870
Corsair Vengeance 16gb 1600Mhz

I just don't get it, also something I noticed weird, when I looked around stuff in the background loaded with lag, and the stuttering continued.

Yes I am, I just don't understand how this could suddenly start stuttering.

Are you using any texture mods?

Yes I am using the Skyrim HD 2K texture mod, but like I said, I tried just vanilla Skyrim and the same stuttering still occurs.

The problem you describe is the same that running out of VRAM would cause. It's a little laborious but try this.

Delete all texture files or mods you may be running.
Revert your ini files to default (if you've changed ugridstoload then you need to follow specific instructions to change it back to 5).
Uninstall and reinstall 12.1 (also try intalling 11.11c instead)
Ensure no program's are running in the background besides steam and your AV.

If all this fixes it, add your mods/ini changes one by one and maybe you'll find the exact cause.

Quick edit: First try disabling crossfire.

I completely removed the texture pack and cleared the VRAM and it works, kind of weird though.

Ok so we know it was the texture packs.

If like me you enjoy the eye candy they offer, then I'd suggest these next steps:

Install the texture packs again, do a defrag, launch the game and see if stuttering starts again.

If it does, maybe try installing a lower res version of the texture pack, or a different pack that offers this (most offer atleast high res and medium res choices - both of which are better than standard textures). After installing, again do a defrag and try the game out.
