Stuttering since 1.4 patch

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 11:17 pm

EDIT:

One fix: Okay, this solution worked for me! For anyone having problems, if you have forced anything in the AMD CCC like anti-aliasing or tessellation, try turning the settings to "Use application settings" instead. My FPS went from 20-30 to an almost constant 60 on Ultra settings with the official HD texture pack. If you have a Nvidia card, use the NCP and see if you've forced anything like I mentioned for the CCC. I hope this helps.

Thanks to deaths_soul for figuring this out!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible fix: Disable the HD texture pack (if you have it installed).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible fix: Delete your .ini and .pref file in your Documents/My Games/Skyrim folder
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible fix: Disable mouse acceleration
  • Go to \Users\[Username]\My Documents\My Games\Skyrim
  • Open the SkyrimPrefs.ini file with notepad
  • Find the line bMouseAcceleration=1 (located under [Controls])
  • Replace the 1 with a 0
  • Save the file (make sure you don't accidentally save it as Skyrim.ini.txt)
http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/34878/how-do-i-turn-off-mouse-acceleration-in-skyrim
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible fix: If using an ATI card, install the latest 12.2 preview drivers

If anyone finds any other solutions, private message me and I'll edit this post with it. Thanks!

I've been getting suttering since 1.4, but before, when people seemingly had more problems, I ran the game perfectly fine.

It looks to be happening when I move, for some reason. When I stay still, my FPS is fine and everything, but when I move, I get this weird stuttering, not too bad sometimes, but incredibly annoying at other times. I used to be able to play the game on Ultra fine, but now even on High I get this stutter. Does anyone have any fixes?

Specs:

Intel i5 2500k 3.3Ghz
Radeon HD 6870
4GB Ram
Windows 7 64bit

Nah, my game has been generally slow since the patch.

I have a Radeon 6870 as well, and i'm getting the slow 'chugging' sort of stuttering, despite having a usual 35-60 fps outside buildings, and sometimes higher inside. I don't know if it's some sort of gpu/driver problem. The game runs perfectly for a while, then it occurs. I had this with Fallout 3, although it wasn't quite as pronounced.
Limiting my fps through the Enb settings to 59, helped a little, but it didn't go away completely. My best hope is a modder can make a stutter remover, if it's possible for Skyrim. :(

I had the same problem as well, due to the DLC texture pack. Everything was perfectly smooth (never below 30FPS) even with 2k HD texture pack but now, after an official pack my GPU gets huge spikes, the game slows down to a crawl for about 10 seconds, just lots of stutters.. I disabled it and was smooth as before. : \ So if you guys enabled the dlc try disabling it for now. Also, I found that during the stuttering, if I alt tab in and out the game comes back to relatively smooth. Very strange.. -__-

I tested the game out on medium, and no stutter/slow down at all. But with the specs in my original post, I should be able to play high at least with a good FPS, and pre-patch, I played on Ultra fine. I did disable the HD texture pack, but it's still happening. I think I'll try reinstalling the game and see if that helps at all.

EDIT: The stutter/FPS drops are way worse outside too, by the way.

Another thing to try is to get rid of .ini and .prefs in your /my games/skyim. I noticed after I deleted the old ones the newly generated were slightly different and with more text in them. (Just be sure to not delete the saves folder :P)

I have the same problem and I too run the game on a HD 6870 GPU.
Hopefully this information will help the responsible people trying to fix this.

My game stutter as soon as the fps drop below 60.

60 fps = perfectly smooth
59 fps = Stutterfest

I tried this, and I'm still getting slowdowns :P

It's not just stuttering too, but general slowness. I never experienced it before the 1.4 patch, but I can noticeably tell now that the FPS is a lot lower on High and Ultra settings.

I'm having problems with stuttering as well. It REALLY shows when I change cells, but after 30 seconds or so, the stuttering disappears, unless I'm standing still for too long or talking with NPC's. Also, the game menu is slower than ever.

Edit: I have a Intel QX9650 CPU, 6gb ram and a geforce 560.

I don't have an ATI card, but are there perhaps any sort of driver updates available for your card that could fix this? The HD texture pack shouldn't have that much of a hit on your system and it shouldn't stutter at 59FPS, so sounds to me like some sort of driver issue.

I just checked with fraps, and when I run, my fps drops stays at 30, dropping down to 20 sometimes. This is way too low for a 6870 and an i5 2500k. Something is definitely up. Not sure how this happened as before the patch my FPS was fine and the game ran fine.

Just wanted to add, same problem here. Curiously enough I find that it goes away when I switch to 3rd person camera view.

I seem to notice a trend here. Just out of curiosity, what's the speed on y'all's HDDs? May not be much in there, but I feel like at this point everything better be taken into account just in case there's more in common than the GPU.

Also, what drivers are you guys using who are having this with the 6870?

Got a model number? I ask as I see another 1 TB up there. It may mean something.

So, 3 1 TBs? All of you have 6870s with the 12.1 drivers. At least we're narrowing it down. :)

May not mean much, but it's still useful for comparisons. At least 2 different models. With some digging, if it's not the GPUs, we may be able to use the models to figure out if some of them from the different companies came from the same factory.

May help track this thing down if it's not the GPUs here :)

Yeah, anything helps really.

Anyone having slowdowns/stutter AFTER the 1.4 patch, please post your system specs here, if you're browsing this thread! It could end up really helping.

Just out of curiosity, are any of you folks forcing anything in either the NCP or the CCC?

I guess it can't hurt to ask, but I doubt that's a bottleneck. I have an older 1.5gbps 7200RPM drive with Skyrim on it and no issues here. GTX560, 4gigs ddr2. Definitely sounds like some sort of software issue to me, i.e. drivers.
