Sudden 1-5fps and forever loading

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:05 pm

Nvidia 8800 GTS
4GB Ram
2.66Ghz Core 2 Duo
Windows 7 64 bit

I got about 30 hours into the game with zero problems. Then, one day the game is unplayable.

I load a saved game. It loads just fine. When it loads, I get 1-5 frames per second on all resolutions and graphic settings and doesn't matter if I'm on the strip with many NPCs or alone in a room.

In addition, when I quick travel, the game loads forever. The roulette wheel sticks, taking about 3 minutes to make a complete rotation on the loading screen. I've let it load for about 15 minutes before I had to close it via the task manager. If I try and quit the game by pressing ESC, it hangs forever.

This problem occurs on all saved games. When I create a new game, it runs great until Doc Mitchell gives me the Pipboy, then it starts. I leave his house and it never loads.

Solutions I've tried that failed
1) d3d9 fix
2) Reinstall
3) Reinstall and also deleting the settings/saved games
*edit* 4) Updated graphic drivers
*edit* 5) Deleted all saved games except for the most current one. It's about 4200kb in size. Apparently there are problems if the file size becomes > 5mb

I spent all night asking Google to find a forum with this same problem, but I can't find anything.

Any ideas?

Weird. Have you tried some other drivers for your video card? If you don't have the newest I'd try those, and if you do I'd try an older one. I'm stumped about the loading time issue, though. Have you tried setting the CPU priority of the game to High in Task Manager?

I tried setting it to high and actually did see a slight improvement. So thanks for that. My main thing is the stuttering when it's loading objects off in the distance. I've found that setting all the fade levels to max actually makes it a little better as it doesn't have to load as often. But, I have the ground LOD set to the lowest setting and the trees and item LOD fade set around the middle. I've yet to find a setting that I'm truly happy with though. Also, what about setting the priority to "Realtime"? Is that better? Thanks.

That doesn't sound anything like the problem I'm having. I'm convinced it's something with the saved game file size. I'm going to experiment with the saved games, but I am redownloading the game in Steam so it will be tomorrow before I can try.

I just reinstalled and deleted all my saved games (backing them up first). I created a new game, and everything was great up until Doc Mitchell handed me the Pipboy... slideshow. I left the house and had to close the game using the task manager after 4-5 minutes of loading.

I guess the only option now is to do a format and reinstallation of Windows, because I'm completely lost.

This is way too high for win7. It means that you have too much stuff running in the background which could cause problems running the game. Try shutting off some of these programs.

??? That is not causing this problem. I've played dozens of different games, including Fallout 3 and New Vegas (for 30 hours) before having this issue without regard to the number of programs I have running. And it's not an unreasonable amount. Google Chrome, Steam, uTorrent, Dropbox, etc. I'm only using about 40% of my RAM at any given time, plus the game.

I've lost count of how many times i've had problems similar to this only to find I had programs running in the background that were unnecessary for gaming. How many times have I had a loading screen hang forever only to find out that Kaspersky or Spyware doctor was in the middle of a scan or an update.

If you are not at least willing to try out some of the things posted here then why even bother posting and asking us for help?

No need to respond to this, Ive already said my piece. Good night. :snoring:
