Suffering with Restartitis

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 7:27 pm

Hello folks,

I don't know if anybody else has had this awful disease but I am curious nonetheless. And here is my story...

I bought Skyrim mid-December, waiting for the spare money to buy it of course. And I have yet to complete any of the guild quests, or even left Whiterun for heaven's sake. It seems that I cannot just settle on a character. I either get bored quickly, get overwhelmed with walking everywhere, or just feel overwhelmed with my character build as it appears weak and I die a billion times.

I did play oblivion and only truly enjoyed it while roleplaying. Even tho in Skyrim, there is cooking, fishing, and whole new activities, it feels like something is missing. Or maybe I am doing something wrong. My favorite characters to role-play was a curious Breton Mage (whom I had the most fun with) and a thief named Garrett (after my favorite game series, The Thief). I have troubles with Warriors since I am biased that magic should be all powerful haha.

So far what I have tried to create:

Battlemage (One hand destruction and sword in other)

and a Battlemage....

And a Spellsword

And an Arcane Archer.

It really doesn't help that everybody says magic is weak. Makes me scared to roll my favorite mage 8(. It always seems when I build a combined class, you cannot really build it evenly. I either focus on magic perks or melee perks to prevent being underwhelming and tickling health bars

Thoughts, comments, helpful hints?

Thanks

Dont be worried about the weak magic, what they are saying is that a Destruction only mage is weak, as it does not scale with the player and is weak compared to melee hit for hit. Which I suppose is correct if you look at base damage.

But a true mage uses all the schools to survive and if you do this then you will be unstoppable by turning enemies on each other with 'Fury' or summoning cannon fodder while you snipe away with your destruction spells.

Use your full compliment of spells and a mage is just as impressive as the warrior in Skyrim.

From December 11. Which would also lead hordes of other people saying I necroed a thread. But thanks for your snide comments. Plus it was more of advice not general complaint. Aka, asking how to combine certain perks while incorporating skill sets. Each case is different. But thanks

And Karniest, I do realize that the Destruction is really fine until mid-40's and I guess it is fine. I am sure I would run out of content too by that time. Maybe I will just svck it up and make a mage. Or maybe an illusionist or conjurer. I just want more of a hand in the destruction of the world lol.

I still don't have a class to flush out the Dark Brotherhood questline tho.... Maybe a vampire assassin? Dagger assassins seems so generic... Any fun assassin builds? I do plan to have a woodland arcane archer build somehow.. if I can figure out a build for it. But I don't know if he/she would kill for money.

Hey Preie, I know what you mean. A mage type with only robes and no weapon skills is my favorite type. I play on Master level, and died so much, it took some getting used to, before I could figure out how to do it.

ILLUSION! Make mobs kill each other, if there is only 1 and DOESN'T absolutely have to be killed, pacify it, or sneak around it. get to 100 and put a point in the tree every level. Have to spend a few minutes of game time doing nothing but leveling it, with the "muffle" spell, but you have to stay ahead, and you need all of those perks. ALL of them.

SNEAK everywhere using muffle (and Invisibility when you get 75 illusion).

CONJURATION. when you see a mob, that hasn't seen you, conjure, stay hidden, let the conjured thing kill it. OR you can blast it with destruction spell or staff every now and then, but try to keep it on the conjured thing. The Aura Whisper shout helps ALLOT with being able to see things before they see you. Detect Life spell only works for things that are alive, it's not very useful (I don't care if it's logical, it's still a pain in the ass).

Destruction spells just get you killed. None of them will one-shot anything stronger than a mud-crab, and if you can't kill something in one or 2 hits, you are dead ( on Master difficulty, if you have no armor or shield).

I find this really fun. If it bores you because you can't kill a mob more directly, you might need to play a warrior/sneaky archer type. Because destruction spells WILL just get you killed over and over. Blasting things is, with this type of character, a BAD idea.

I think I've done well over fifty restarts. I wasn't expecting the game to have so many different avenues to take and I kept falling into the trap where I feel like I need a taste of everything. It's best to just sit down with a piece of paper and decide what skills you enjoy the most, then stick with it. It's okay to deviate a little bit from your intended class, but don't stray too far or you'll find yourself going to the Main Menu and pressing New.

I suggest finding the playstyles you like and stick with them. Go ahead and alternate between characters, choose different guilds and make different choices for them.

And it's nice to see another Thief fan on the forums.

Edit: Make that fans.

Oh it was not my intention to offend you, it was an actual déjà vu feeling.
I now see the difference in the two threads. didn't see it was started in December. I don't think anyone will blame you for necroing a thread that is less than a month old though :)

The problem is not the sort of characters you've been creating. The problem is YOU. Any of the character types you mentioned will be fine; you just need to put some time in to get "over the hump." All characters are weak at the beginning. You just need to stick with it. I promise that -- if you do -- you'll have a blast!

I have it too, don't worry :D

It's just gonna get worse when they release the creation kit and the mods have at the textures/colors of the creation screen. GAH!

This is a good point. No matter what you choose, you're going to feel weak at lower levels, with the exception of combat classes. So whenever you feel like the game is defeating you and you made a bad choice, just remember there are no bad choices, just different choices. So long as you don't stretch yourself thin and try to master every skill at the same time, you'll be just fine after a few level-ups.

Yeah, after finishing the main quest, I restarted. More than once.
Think I'm happy with my character now, but I did keep restarting for a bit.

Actually just last night was looking at the showracemenu command so I wouldn't have to keep exploring the start of the game and I could then just change my character after a certain point. That's another thread though with the consequences of doing that!

I read the above with more than personal interest. I agree totally. I am now on my 3rd restart and loving it. My present char. is a pure thief/sneak/type with Archery skill but I have (from previous experience) also added a couple of Illusion and Conjuration spells to help out in sticky situations as used in the above quote.
Already I am planning, when done with this guy, to play a totally mage type without any weapons at all. My foreseeable future is now spoken for .

I have the same problem. Not because I feel weak, just because I think of something new, go I MUST HAVE IT, and create a new character with that concept . . . only to think of something else 5 minutes later. I hadn't gotten a character past level 10 until recently - I'm finally running out of ideas however.

Best avatar ever

I didn't care for any of the imagery from Deadly Shadows. I believe this one is from Metal Age. I think. Question, why Lord Bafford? Is it also reference to the Thief Series? His Manor was so easy to rob blind ha. And didn't have much loot either

Mrderp: Yes, and it hurts too. Maybe antibiotics? Doc on the forums? Lol

Morg: I don't have a computer nor the money to buy a computer capable of playing Skyrim on.. It is a shame.

Milk: The only problem is I like to play dead is dead. Since in reality, if a hero dies, he dies ha. It is the reason I focus on an certain perk areas to prevent death. Maybe just too restrictive on myself

Heres my own deju vu reply; in an RPG, character build is almost everything. When the character build is lightened, the game suffers.

Deadly Shadows? What's Deadly Shadows? *shhhh!*

Yea, that avatar is definitely from Thief II, in which Lord Bafford actually makes a cameo at Angelwatch. His name is in the guestbook somewhere. I chose him because that level is etched in my brain. I played and re-played it nearly a hundred times with the demo before the full game was released. It was such a revolutionary game for me at the time.

Hey Preie.

I just deleted my level 39 character in skyrim, because I just didn't like his progress and perk setup.

I could have reloaded a prior save, but wasn't happy.

I did reload a save just before going into Helgen keep with either the stormcloak or the imperial......this time around I chose
the stormcloak, since I will be roleplaying that part.

I played thief, thief 2, and thief deadly when they all came out, and still own them, and enjoy the fan missions.

My character in Skyrim is not a thief, but a ranger. Not sure if I want to start over again. haha. I'm up to level 10, and will probably start again.

Only to change my race. Imperial just doesn't seem to fit. What do you think Geralt would be as a race?

Hah ha.. The unwelcome guest demo. Pretty much the best demo ever! Then Life of the Party emulated the original demo nicely. Definitely a fond memory, especially the Necromancer tower and the drunk Guard I always threw off the edge.

But I digress, Penumbras, Geralt as in Garrett? I would actually assume he would be an Imperial. Ideas on money, trade, and business. I originally started him as a Bosmer because of the archery bonus but I feel like Imperial fits better. The only real trouble, and depending on how you played the Thief Series, was how to go through the entire dungeon without killing anything but the undead and plants.

A ranger as in a combat focused archer? Or more of the woodland archer?

Edit. I GOT it! This game needs a blackjack for non-killing approach haha

Many sleepless nights with Dromed!

In Skyrim, I always incorporate sneak into my character's ability, due in part to my experience with the Thief series. I just find it gives the game a whole different flavor when you have to practice patience, take NPC paths into consideration, light, movement, etc. Much better than hack 'n slash!

I too suffer from this! I cant complete anything. My highest charater was my first character which is a warrior and I got her to level 31 and a little bit into the companions and the main quest. I keep having new ideas on what I want to use with a new character.
