suggestion for speech

Why is it that the only way to build up your speech (besides the few people in the world that have speech checks) is to sell your goods. It isn't a barter skill. It is a speaking skill.

There should be another way of being able to build on your speech skill. I was thinking that if you go up to somebody that has dialog options and go through all of them that should give XP into speech as you accually spend time talking to someone and therfore learning how to speek to people.

Then there should be speech quest where you talk to someone that starts off with snide remarks and as you pass dialog speech checks they then begin to become friendly with you then let you in on some kind of "hey check this place/person out" or "hey go get this from over here" quest.

I just think speech hasn't really progressed (accually it feels more like it has regressed) throughout the years and it really doesn't seem like there is even a need for it now besides it being some bogus skill that only true RPGers will build up to feed thier characters role needs.

Personally I would not mind if it was merged in with other skills like pickpocket/lockpicking that are for role playing purpouses as far as creating a perk tree for it but I would like for there to be more use and substance for these skills instead of there being no way to build them up until you come accrossed a moment where your skill level isn't even high enough to complete its checks.

Speech was not well thought out or implemented in this game. And, you do get a skill up when successfully Intimidating or Persuading someone, so Selling is not the only way to increase Speech. Only you do not get too many of these Intimidation's or Persuasion's to do in the game. It does make sense that Bartering is dependent on Speech as a good sales person is a good speaker, no way around that.

However, Speech needs to be like it was in Morrowind again. But, then they would have to bring back Reputation and Disposition again.

Note, here is a trick to leveling Speech. When selling, use your Home or End keys on the keyboard to quickly get to the Max or Min to sell when you have a quantity of more than 5. Not sure what to use on the controllers on the consoles. Anyway, you get a boost for each item you sell, not how many items you sell in one transaction. So, sell one at a time.

Wow really? Thanks for that tip I never knew it made a difference. I've been short changing my Speech this whole time. I thought it went off value not items.

I do that sometimes, but honestly, I have seem to have little problem leveling up speech. So I rarely bother.

In addition to using the Thief stone to level up those skills faster, if you are Well Rested (+10%) it gives a bonus to your skills as well. If you don't own a house, the 10 gold that it costs to sleep the night away at an inn does make a difference.

Right and Left Bumpers on the X360 controller - assuming similar for PS3.

My problem wasn't so much leveling up speech but that it is pretty usless except to get more gold. I was just thinking of a better way to put the speech skill to use. It seems like the only use for speech is the few instances where you can do a speech check but then there is always a bribe option in there which if you have enough money (which is ussually somewhere near 100gold so its not hard to keep that on hand) makes the speech skill obsolete.

I just realized this on my last character. I too thought it was based on total value. Still, I want to level it as slowly as possible...usually. So selling in large quantities is favorable.

But they did away with barter as a skill and here we are.

Yeah and generally speaking once you get your speech skill to like 25-30, you pass most if not all persuasion attempts anyway.

I think more quest should have had instances where if you have a good speech skill, it would make it where you could bypass certain parts of a quest or make that quest easier.

Or talk other people into going into that dungeon and getting the quest item for you.
