Suggestion for the developers: Please don't alter the level

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:30 am

tbh I'm not sure, I have enjoyed the cap where it is and I've no wish to become god of the mojave, but there have been times where I just fall short on a single skill that would suit my character because the points have been spent to fully develope the others.

Heck, reading back over my own statement, yeah I agree with the OP, the cap is the reason I create a new game and character.

I love how these threads are never consolidated into the what you want from DLC threads.

What?

Bobbleheads had nothing to do with Fallout before Fallout 3. This makes no sense whatsoever.
Newcomers to the series, I thought the same thing when I played FO3, that is I thought it followed canon until I did a little reading.
I did try FO2 a couple of weeks back to get the background for NV, could not manage much of it unfortunately.

If DLC gives out any experience points at all, that distorts a player's level progression. With added content, a character might reach level 30 at a game completion mark of 60% instead of 90% (or whatever the original goal was). That punishes players who use the DLC. They'd be stuck with a character who couldn't progress - or they'd have to ration out which quests they do to avoid that scenario.

Besides, I don't see why the developers who made the game couldn't come up with a way to extend the cap and keep the same sort of balance we already enjoy. To suggest that they couldn't suggests that they're incapable and I think they're capable.

The same goes for Bobble-heads and other buffs. If they keep it in line with the content already in the game and extend the challenges and de-buffs appropriately then it's all good. Put Bobble-heads back in and make them like traits. You'd get a buff and a de-buff at the same time. No problem. It'd be easy to write Bobble-heads into canon so that they made sense too. Say they're data storage for some VR simulator project. Do a little back-story. Get your character to the simulator, plug in the right Bobble-head. Get your perk.

Nothing is so broken that it can't be tweaked to be awesome.

I agree wholeheartedly with your "remove the level cap!" or "I miss bobble heads!" comment. I thought those bobbleheads were such a bad idea and I deliberately avoided picking them up.

But let me ask you this, assuming the level cap remains at thirty, do you think you reach the cap too soon? Do you think you level up too quickly in other words?

I think you should hit the level cap when you've done everything in the game, and just a little bit of grinding. Do you agree or do you think it's ok as is?

And not really about the point you made but skill related, do you think the skill requirements for crafting are too high?

Seven snow globes. Wow. Great job Obsidian your just so darn clever! What's this? Three of them are practically eight next to each other? No effort in trying to hide them? A reward of 2,000 caps? IF I kill house no caps for me? Seven? pathetic Obsidian. You can have all the fan boys you want defending this game saying how it's so great but you made a complete piece of trash. Seven?! Really?! I can name the locations off of my freaking head! No freaking effort! Mormon's Fort, Lucky 38 Cocktail Lounge, Jacobs Town, Hoover Dam, Vault 21, Good Spring's Cemetery, and last but certainly not [censored] least the Boomer's Museum! Honestly the only thing you guys are good at is making a good story and even I thought it was still pretty sad. The chip, the whole time, was a freaking flash drive with an upgrade? REALLY? And you don't even have to use it depending on your faction choice! Oh my god am I the only one who thinks this game was a complete fail?! How long did you even work on it with the engine already there?! Back to dlc, ya raise the level cap. I want to raise my skills and get some more perks. Oh will I become too over powered? Shut up and raise your difficulty then.

Well I agree that it is good you cannot build a character that can be the best in everything.

Though I think some skills really need to be balanced. Right now the sniper build is so powerful, that it can cheese even the mighty Deathclaws, making them a joke.

I managed to do it, and I don't see what is so bad about people being able to make a character like that if they want to.

Exactly, if people want to make a character that is a jack of all trades why stop them? It's a game and we all have our own fun in different ways. I myself play on the 360, but look foward to getting New Vegas on the PC as I love mods. :D

you can practically make such a character already. it just requires a little bit more attention in your build up.
i'm still on my first playthrough, (lvl26, 65h in, haven't been on the strip yet), and while only 2 of my skills are officially maxed out (guns and energy weapons), there a couple of others, that are as matter of fact too:

lockpick 73 -> hat +2 -> clothing +5 -> magazine boost from comprehension perk +20 -> 100
speech 75 (70 would be enough) -> clothing +10 -> magazine boost from comprehension perk +20 -> 100
science 70 -> clothing +10 -> magazine boost from comprehension perk +20 -> 100
medicine 70 -> clothing +10 -> magazine boost from comprehension perk +20 -> 100
repair 90( just for the jr perk, otherwise 75 would do) -> clothing +5 -> magazine boost from comprehension perk +20 -> 100

these 5 five skills are perfectly suited for the use of skill magazines, since they're used for ad-hoc checks.
moral of the story: comprehension still rocks as it did in fallout 3.

so, actually i have 7 maxed out skills with 4 level ups left to spend points on, and didn't even take educated and went with an int of 8, leaving even more potential for the interested.
my other skills are at 60 for sneak, 55 survival, 50 explosives, 40 barter and around 30 for melee and unarmed. so, i could bring another skill like expl or barter close to the max.

@topic

100% agree, for the simple fact that there are already enough skill points to distribute.
altered level caps ruin the game balance. and i don't want to see horribly implemented countermeasures like the albino radscorpion again.

Yes just my point being we all have different play styles.

Personally I feel Level 50 is a nice solid level, 30 just has always seemed off to me.

Agreed with OP - I didn't like the change made in FO3 with DLCs witth lvl 30 cap and 9 to all SPEACIAl. Made the whole char creation/specialization irrelevant.

Agreed with freqnasty too - in FNV besides energy, unarmed and barter my char was kind of jack of all other trades with the help of magazines, drugs and clothes. It takes a bit effort but it is possible.

EDIT
In FNV we have cap at lvl 30 but perk every two levels which makes it fine. I wouldn't mind a slower progression though, it was too fast in FO3 and stills seems to fast in FNV to me.

I agree with the OP, "the skill system is blanced well enough."

Then, again, I thought it was well balanced in FO3.

Let's get real folks! FO3 was easy - if - you allowed yourself to make it easy. So far as I can see New Vegas is no different. The system allows for you to make it challenging or easy, depending on you preference, which is what makes this a great game.

I wouldn't change a thing as far as leveling up or perks go. Personally, "striving" for a perk and leveling up is what I look foward to the most. I know what I want to make the game fun, while avoiding certain things that make the game too easy. The leveling up and perk system allows me to choose certain things that may not be the "best," but maybe gives me something to make the current playthrough a little more fun. I can gimp my character, to make a challenge, and still have "non-game-breaking" perks to look foward to.

Just my humble opinion.

any hat, as long as your perception is below 10 :)
for me it's the 1st recon beret, but a pre-war hat will do the same service...

lol I say let players do what they want. If someone like me wants a jack-of-all-trades master-of-all character, then so be it. I don't play Fallout games for realism, but for the fun of it.

If I want realism I have STALKER sitting on my Steam list :P
