I would like to shed some light on the question about exactly this, the textures that will blow a normal PC out of the question , textures that are for workstation. Will we be able to get that kind of package.
This would mark history if you make this, i am not talking about a small package like other studios do , they increase from 128x128 to 256x256 ... i want some serious
What i always wanted is simple, to be able to READ all that small text that was in the environiment that is not intended to be read, i am not able to do that in 90% of games released, no matter about their bla bla graphics and packs it's still not practically useful.
From Metroid Prime games i played a lot i just evolved into a Adventure freak and i always looked those smallest of details, i just loved it so much. , Rage is aslo an adventure and if the game is so great it would unlock that inner geek and i would start exploring again like i used to. And having an exploration and
Rage is IDTech5 , it will look awesome already, but ... i would like to see IDSoftware show their loyalty to PC no matter what, there are always people with great PCs and we need a developer that RECOGNIZES that , there are so many overclockers waiting to get something to chew on, and hardware manufacturers are always supportive the most heaviest games. I want to see this game a new Benchmark - Crysis 2 certainly failed. (yeah they released a high-res pack now, but some say that textures could have been even better)
Statistical Market research will not find those people who run such good PCs, because they're not active people running around all sorts of gaming sites - that is what most devs see "ah there's nobody that can run, so we don't need to make it" - no no no , all those people will come out of their shadows.
I would like to see serious stuff not just on terrain , but on models too , basically all textures in the game. This cannot be such a hard project for IDSoftware, please now is the chance to give the PC community a big "health boost" and a big reason to buy the game.
These Optional big-patches are so much more reasons to buy the game - PLEASE DO NOT DO DLC ON PC - DLC does more "community" damage in long-term than it does bring in money in short-term. Plus not everyone is able to get it because it's normally not retail - even if i had an international credit card i wouldn't do online payment because i don't have any other big need to do so yet.
There is no no limit in releasing this super textures. Many Developers always have that werid mind-set of being worried how players are going to run that - it's obvious that there are a lot of noobs in the gaming industry too ... 80% of it are nooby console developers. , the other 20% is Valve , Bethesda , IDsoftware , Epic , Firaxis, Crytek , DICE , Relic , Respawn and others (Blizzard is known for it's crappy technology in games, SC2 engine is a joke)
You don't have to be worried, i run without pagefile and i expect IDTech5 engine to properly detect (many engines don't seem to realize and they mix up terms like: "virtual memory"(pagefile) with "virtual address space" ) , i have windows 7 x64 totally tweaked for performance , all those UACs and naggies turned off , no windows firewall and half of useless services disabled , there is pretty much very little impact on games from windows components except VC and DX libraries and other requirements.
Even if it's some freaking 2 hour complex procedure to install it , i don't mind it - it's even a good challenge so ... make it happen.
Im also sending this on bethesda emails so have more chance to be put into consideration or forwarded to IDsoftware - im not sure if they ever post on forums or atleast keep an eye on it ?
EDIT:
If you don't get what i mean exactly , it's textures that aren't culled, that aren't cut , the textures that you use for a 24GB RAM workstation.
Or if that's not possible , what about a cut down version of that as long as it's ofcourse better than the ones on the launch disks.
PC Games never have to be cut down , PC games just need robust and very advanded options/settings screens that control sophisitcated scaling systems inside the game, you can practically run with any PC you want as long as it's within minimum specs. There is no max limit. Other studios are making up nonsense because they have no idea.
