Swords - critical hits are better than slight bleeding damage or armour mitigation. I would prefer the armour mitigation if enemies actually had armour
I love the Oblivion swords ( 3E ) Which I use in Skyrim too. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ik2m9HbvgwM/Tu3wN9UAruI/AAAAAAAAANc/QxfASD-S4e0/s1600/3871-3-1324093825.jpg I love the Maces which break bones !

Depends on the character really. If I have a brutish muscle woman then I want a two handed blunt weapon to truly crush enemies. If I have a noble swordsman with finesse in fencing I'll want to use a long one handed sword. If I have a outlaw who's killed more people than he's taken a shower then to use a axe as I think it looks more frightening.
I don't have a preference, it all depends on the character I have.

I don't really like any melee weapons, as they all make you look like you've never held a sword before in your life. It's just mindless swingging. But swords are my favorite becasue they look the best, I think.
