Either can get you to armor cap and become weightless. So, choose by your RP needs.

Heavy Armor will protect you sooner, so if you are a no-reloads player like me it will help you survive early to mid game easier if you are close-up fighter.

I chose heavy, but i read somewhere a suggestion to just go with light. After all, if you block properly you'll be blocking a good bit of the damage, so you can save some weight by taking light.

That said, blocking can get more difficult in instances where you're facing several opponents. Unless you can backstep and keep them in front of you, or else manage to fight in some tighter situations to prevent them encircling you, a good number of their attacks will be getting through unblocked, and so the heavy armor isn't necessarily a bad idea or a waste of carrying capacity. I'm playing on Adept, with a heavy armor skill of 100 and smithing of 100, with steel plate armor I've improved to legendary and a block skill recently boosted to 100 - and even still, I get some opponents that can be pretty tough.

I forget if unenchanted armor protects at all against magical attacks, like spells or dragon-breath, but sometimes even melee attacks can do some damage. I can usually one-shot almost all bandits, and even the bandit chiefs go down quickly, but their shots still seem to hurt, at least when there's six or seven of them around me striking. If I'm swarmed to that degree, I can't block all the shots and while the bandits are pretty fragile, they still can do some damage until you separate their head from their shoulders - and so perhaps that heavy armor isn't a bad idea after all.

I guess it depends on how you want to fight. If you want to use some stealth and some archery to thin the enemy ranks beforehand, then some decent light armor might be sufficient. Me, I did that for a bit at lower levels, when most enemies seemed pretty tough even with heavy armor. As I progressed and committed to axe+shield instead of dual-wielding a sword and axe, I started finding the rhythm of blocking with shield and axe pretty satisfying. Heavy armor allows me to simply not bother with sneaking and archery most of the time, and just wade into the thick of battle. I've taken on groups ranging from half a dozen Thalmor to a similar number of Forsworn led by a Briarheart, to four or so Draugr Death Overlords with ebony and enchanted weapons, to what seemed to be six or seven bandits with one or two bandit chiefs. Three of the wood-sprite-women that I can't remember what they're called, but have that buzzing sound, and summon cave bears - yeah, I can handle that. It hurts like hell and I get low on health, but I can get through those mobs usually without chugging a potion. I did have one quest where three or four mages kicked my ass and I had to reload like five times, but otherwise I do pretty well with one-handed, block, heavy armor and smithing.

But definitely, definitely use smithing. Push your smithing hard. Light armor improved well will be more protective than unimproved heavy armor, I expect. I know that lower-tier heavy armor that's been improved to legendary is better than unimproved higher-tier heavy armor. Smithing is your friend. Don't go into combat with substandard arms and armor.

How does blocking make no sense?

Don't take smithing. It is so over-powered, it makes the whole game mind-numbingly easy. 100 smithing and anyone who is not a complete moron can kill pretty much anything on Master difficulty. My current character is a dual wielder, and I got him to 50 smithing just so I could make a modded armour that was not available anywhere else but smithing, and it is already over-powering.

I would reccomend Heavy Armour and not very much smithing - you can get Light Armour to the armour cap, but only through extensive smithing. Heavy armour perks are also much better - at 70 Heavy Armour there is a perk to make it weigh nothing and not slow you down. Making it effectively a better version of light armour.

Sword and Shield is the easiest character to play, provided you simply use block a bit. Getting the perk for your block that slows down time when an enemy power attacks also helps a lot (maybe a little too much, but it's not terrible).

I say light armor for the extra stamina. You'll need stamina to block, power bash, power attack and run away if need be. You can reach the armor cap with both heavy & light armor anyway. You'll spend less perks going up the light armor tree though.

That way you won't be able to craft any of the endlevel armor sets. Overpowering them or not, is at your own discretion.

Light armor tree also has that perk. In fact, I'd very much like to have 9-10 extra perk points to go up there too...

You can spec your tree to increase damage dealt from bashing, being able to run while blocking, knockback when sprinting with the shield raised and gain elemental protection while the shield is raised. Concerning the latter, it saves up enchanting slots.
As for time dilation while blocking against a power attack... I hadn't seriously looked into it, until recently. It's actually fun

I like heavy...particularly Steel Plate. It's a solid choice of armour....

I went heavy armor, mainly because it helped make my character more durable , sooner. It has a -50% stagger reduction, though I'm not sure how often that has come into play.

Light armor has a +50 stamina regen perk that I'd like to have. That would help with being able to use power attacks and bashes more often, though so would having a weapon with aborb stamina (having both couldn't hurt for offensive players).

Neither choice is a bad one. Just go with what looks prettiest to you.

Smithing alone is certainly not overpowered, even pushed to 100, even on Adept.

personally, it's completely a matter of roleplaying and what particular build i'm going with.

since, my character is a nord i went with light since the game itself gives nords a +5 bonus for light armor.

i'll roll my first few characters as gamesas originally developed them.

Heavy armor is on par with light armor. You're eventually going to get to the armor cap either way, so why not choose light? There are seemingly more unique light armors, such as Thieves guild, dark brotherhood, and nighingale attire.
