Taking a dragon out with no Range?

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 8:10 pm

No offensive spells, no archery. Is there an easy way to go about doing this? Or must I wait for it to get bored flying around so it lands?

Well, I'm going to try and digress this info with as little as spoiling as possible, but there may be some spoilers, so read at your discretion:

Spoiler
At some point during the main quest, you'll get a shout that will force dragons to land. It's fairly early on into it.

But, otherwise, if you have no ranged you're going to have to wait for it to land.

Look for a large expanse of flat ground. They seem to land earlier and more often if there is plenty of room to move. My character is a melee warrior and when I spot a Dragon the first thing I do is look for an open space. They seem to prefer higher ground too, or else it's my imagination. A great spot, if you can manage it is to lure it to the round stone structures where they are born.

I just encountered one in Winterhold that was a pain. He kept landing on top of buildings only. I finally managed to lure him out to the edge of town and he found a space to land at last. Once that happened I was able to battle him.

Keep out of line of sight when he is trying to burn you from above. He'll land.

Lure them to plains area, with as few high features (trees/buildings) as possible. Eventually they will land. Try your best to keep them staggered so you can keep them from flying away (you may have to take a few hits to do this to save stamina).. when their health reaches a certain point they will not fly so then attack as normal.

Don't worry, dragons are not particularly smart and will randomly land for no reason to give you a chance.

Just find an open area for the dragon to land in. They will land quite frequently if they have a spot to do so. If you are on the side of a mountain, nope... you are out of luck.

The dragons land pretty fast in my game. If they are flying, they attack me, then they might see a giant with his mammoth and then i have to follow the dragon.

Don't know if this would violate your 'rule' about no offensive magic, I don't think it does....but cast the summon for the fire atronach(?) prior to engaging. Also sprint to the nearest flat area. That should do the trick. They are drawn by movement somewhat, and if you give them someplace to land they will. The fiery thingie will also get its attention. Once it hovers(or lands) hit it with a shout and it is money.

I don't bother with bows or spells and such either. I wait till it is on the ground then I wade in and smack it around. The above is generally how I get em on the ground for me to squish. Usually. Last night I had an ancient that I met up with in a mountain pass and I actually had to bail. It wouldnt/couldnt land and it perched on the rocks just out of reach and then hosed me down. As soon as I pulled out my bow, it would take off and circle. I took that time to call back up the atronach and heal, then it would perch again. =(
Did this 3 or 4 times trying to find a spot where it couldn't hit me to force it down. Finally, I ran down to the valley floor to try to pull it down to a flat area, but it wouldn't follow. Meh, all I was doing was burning arrows and a few pots for no reason. Damn smart dragon (for once). Only time I had to let a dragon go...../sigh

Why limit yourself like that? Iron arrows are dirtcheap and weigh nothing. You can carry any bow you like and use it only for shooting Dragons to aggro them, being a pure naturally has disadvantages. I for once never managed to lure a random dragon by waving my Battleeaxe.

But once more, seriously have a range option, even if it's the weakest variant.

I kid you not, I'm level 45 on my character sword/board + 2hander. What I do to get a dragon to land cast candle light, or whatever its called. It's like moths to a light. I've used a bow maybe twice and I dont have dragon rend yet.

What? I thought Dragonrend was at the end of the main quest! (or at least hear it. I haven't done it in ages)

Spellbreaker shield is capable of blocking an entire dragon breath attack (unless it is elder/ancient) with its projected ward. If you don't want that, use a shield with the resist magic blocking perk.

Sorry to say, but you gotta be pragmatic. You should have a melee kill skill and a ranged kill skill. Even if just in a pinch. Overspecialization only works if you have others with you to cover your shortcomings.

Just look at TF2.

I just wait for it to land if you dont have dragonrend...

I dont use any magic besides, the magic staff that summons a daedra lord and I dont use archery...SO what I do is wait for it to land, take a fire/frost potion to help defened and attack when it lands..It's very challenging but it can be done.
