Taming wild animals?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 11:02 am

Everyone knows the dog companion from FO3, Dogmeat? Well, in a post-apocalyptic world filled with mutated animals, why stick with an animal combat companion that's just as ordinary as a dog in any other game? Maybe there should be a multi-ranked perk that allows for the taming of bigger / better creatures, or just a skill point / S.P.E.C.I.A.L. requirement for better animals, as there is for equipment. Please point out any potential problems with this addition, as I guess I can't see any right now and I think it'd probably be a pretty cool addition. (Possibly in hardcoe mode, you'd have to spare some of your food / water / medicine to make sure it survives?)

I think the concept is good, but I think it would break the game. If we could tame near enough any animal, it would take so much from the game.

I like just having one animal follower -- it allows me to grow more attached to the pet.

I like Dogmeat just fine. Doesn't add any wackiness to it. Seeing the ocassional (I spelled that so wrong, sorry.) tamed Yao Guai was cool, because it made me laugh a bit and carry on. If we could tame more, that would be fine, but I wouldn't use that feature.

Too right, man. I remember seeing that Scavenger with a Yao Gaui. That was pretty cool. But it wouldn't make sense for the player because you're going into cities and stuff, and you can't just bring in your pet Yao Guai.

Really, we already have something similar with the Animal Friend perk -- I hope Obsidian have kept that.

My bad, I think I presented the idea a little wrong. I wouldn't want to change the one non-humanoid companion rule, (having more than one at the same time would be a burden) I was just poking at the idea of taming something of equal size (ability?) to dogmeat, maybe one of those acid spitting geckos or a radscorpion or something, not a full on deathclaw or yao-guai. Nothing that would be capable of besting FO3's Charon or something, just another option to keep things a little more different, or a little more personalized. Maybe an animal with a ranged attack to compliment a character who uses power armor and can take a lot of punishment, or maybe a radscorpion or something a little tougher to act as a sort of reversal role of the other option for longer-ranged characters. I think it'd also add some interesting elements to hardcoe mode, like being forced to feed certain animals only certain stuff, I'm not sure.

The animal friend perk didn't tame them. Neither rank did. The first rank of that perk simply made the animals you encountered not attack you. The second perk made it so if there are any nearby that happened to be around when you were being attacked, they'd come help out. I'm just putting out the idea of having a permanant animal companion, EXACTLY like dogmeat was, only instead of a dog, having the option to have an acid spitting gecko or whatever those were, or maybe one of the normal-sized smaller radscorpions. Just to add some variety to the companion options. Just like a stealthier character usually did better in FO3 with Charon, (Because of his high sneak skill) or a ranged character with star paladin cross (Who had power armor and a decent melee weapon), someone who wanted to have an animal companion could choose something that better suits their playing style. Yes I can already see some issues with bringing a dangerous mutated insect into a settlement, but still. I have nothing against dogmeat, but I have nothing against options either.

Good idea. With an Animal Friend Perk at level 3, you could train any one creature at a time to be your companion. When it dies, you can train another one. It wouldn't break the game.

i think that if an animal could be trained it should be able to be trained. a rad scorpion doesn't have the mind for training, but a yao guai, could be trained.
but if you don't feed the yao guai, it should go on a rampage.

here's an idea, what about feeding your animal companion. i've heard people not want to have to feed their companions, but what about pets?!?! you have to feed them in real life.

That sounds like a really good idea actually.

Would be a waste of perks. If perks are set a every two levels or hopefully every three, having the same perk three times would be a waste. Most powerful animal you could train is a Big Horner. I also hope they don't have it so we can pick the same perk more then once. FO3 has that because it's every one level and most svck.

Also how would training animals work in Fallout? I don't want anything like walking up to them an pressing a button till they are "trained."

Just seems like a waste.

Well why not change the Animal Friend perk as a whole? Keep the ability to not get attacked by the wild life but make it so that you can tame animals. You can then use a Mesmatron-esque device to tame them. No more wasted Perks.

Aminal friend already has a bonus other then the animals not attacking. That bonus is, if you're under attack by deathclaw, bugs, robots or people any animal close by will help you. I see no need to have trained animals. Also my question still remains, how would you go about "training" the animal? Just having a perk and walking up to it and pressing a button? Sound stupid to me.

Everything doesn't have to make sense dude its a game. Like I said. You use something like the Traps in WoW to get the animal. Then a special dialogue option comes up to tame. Only reason for Trained Animals is the fact that you can have more than just Dogmeat. You can have a Yao Guai, Radscorpion, etc as your companions. Doesn't sound as stupid as you're making it out to be.

Radscorpions don't fall under animal friend same with Deathclaws. Something using traps could work but then they would be pissed at you and would cancel out animal friend.

Games don't have to be 100% real but adding things where you can just walk up to an animal and say something to them to they become you're follower just does not sit right with me. Kinda makes me sick.

I think the Devs already hinted we will have more then just Dogmeat or other dogs. Remeber in Fallout 2 we can have more then Dogmeat when it comes to dogs. I am for buying a pet Yao Guai but not training them.

Well i was just trying to make the idea somewhat plausible . Honestly I wouldn't care but I think it would be something nice to implement in the future. You just gotta have that willing suspension of disbelief.

I know I am coming off as negative but I am just trying to figure out a plausible way for it to work. I don't want it to be like one of those games where magic powers are used to train animals like WOW or I am guessing Oblivion..

Sounds like a cool thing. In all honesty though, it should take up big part of your level up.

Thanks for the feedback. I now see the problem with taming something as unintelligent as a radscorpion. So far, the only major in-game obstacle in the way of this perk cruising in (besides the fact that it probably has no chance of being added at all, in any form) is the actual taming process. Yeah, most ideas are unrealistic and utter BS, but then again, how did you "tame" dogmeat in FO 3? Oh wait a minute... Walking up to it and pressing buttons. How did the scavengers tame their yao-guai's, and the enclave control the deathclaws? I'm sure Obsidian could come up with something.

They used those brain thingamaligs to do that. That's why you see that helmet on the Enclave Controlled ones.

Dogmeat was already tame and he likes you for saving him simple. Scavengers most likely find babies and raise them. If we had the Enclave mind control helmets they put on the deathclaws then we could control them. Now we just need to trank them. Still FO3 shows that they turn on the Enclave so it has it's risks.
