Is Tamriel on Earth?

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 6:02 pm

After completing the Act II quest: Elder Knowledge, when you bring the Elder Scroll to Paarthunax he says "The very bones of the Earth are at your disposal" The moment I heard this I was both confused and amazed. Confused at the fact that this could mean that Tamriel is a continent on the Earth?! And amazed for the same reason. It stuck in my head all the way through the fight with Alduin and I'm very eager to find out what you all think about this, if anyone else has wondered the same thing, and if Bathesda can actually confirm it. :-)

Earth is an element meaning dirt or ground. All planets are referred to as such, our world was named as such before we knew other planets existed

No, Tamriel is a continent on Nirn. I guess Nirn is the closest thing to Earth in TES lore, at least that I know about.

Earth can mean dirt, or soil. The Bones of the Earth however, are the Eight Divines that sacrificed their power (sometimes unwillingly) to make up Nirn.

Tamriel is a continent on Nirn, which is a distinct planet. The Elder Scrolls cosmology is in no way related to our own.

He meant earth in the elemental sense, like earth, fire, water, & air.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, according to ES lore, there is no difference between planes and planets. The celestial bodies appearing as planets in the heavens is merely the mortal mind trying to understand what it cannot.

Earth means ground.

They are on a planet called Nirn. Last time I checked, our planet didn't have two moons.

Since the Nirn answer was already given, there's something else I'd like to point out: two moons.

If it was truly Earth, then Bethesda's writing team's got a huge burden on its shoulders to carry in order to rid the second moon as well as push one of them farther away. ;)

Yeah OP TES is set on Earth. We used to have two moons but now we have one. And all the elves died out and the orcs are living in Mexico.

The next elder scrolls should be in space.

So let me get this straight. Tamriel is on Nirn? :P

Basically, it's like Star Wars. "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away", yet the world is mostly populated by life indigenous to the 3rd planet from Sol. It allows the building of a fantasy world with familiar sights and experiences, plus a lot that is new and exciting.

Also, pretty sure Nirn is the only planet in Mundus (considered Lorkhan's plane of Oblivion), and the 'sun' and the stars are just holes left in Mundus after lesser aedra fled.

Tamriel is on Mundus!

Pretty sure Mundus is the plane of existence that houses all the planets. Tamriel is a continent on Nirn.

Tamriel is on Nirn, which exist in Mundus, which exist in the Aurbis.

The "earth-bones" are the corpses of the aedra that compose the matter of the universe (sort of...Shezzar is the "concept" of matter, but the other gods were used as "building materials" for the Mundus), as well as it's natural laws.

Paarthurnax is basically saying that the power to bend reality is within the Elder Scroll's power (which it is).

That is actually the cosmology of Lord of the Rings/Arda.
