Nirn is the planet on which the Elder Scrolls is set. It floats in the void of Oblivion and is, for all intents and purposes, the majority of the realm known as Mundus.[1] Sources often use the terms Nirn and Mundus synonymously, despite the technical differences in the two terms. Nirn was created during the Dawn Era by the Aedra and Anu-aligned spirits, based on Lorkhan's inspiration [2] and Magnus' designs.[3][4]
Tamriel is the main continent of Nirn and is its mythic and symbolic center. Tamriel is split into 9 provinces: Black Marsh, Cyrodiil, Elsweyr, Hammerfell, High Rock, Morrowind, Skyrim, Summerset Isle, and Valenwood.

Right. No "Earth" in the game. The planet is Nirn. The continent is Tamriel. The universe is Mundas. Earth is not here.

I know I was surprised when it was refered to as earth on one of the loading screens. IMO Todd and Pete are losing their perspective of the lore in favor of modernizing and mainstreaming the TES universe for people who do not understand why there is a back story to TES. I have noticed the more mainstreaming of lore since Oblivion. Look at the lore on wiki and notice the change when Oblivion came along. In older games and timelines events occured in the background that had nothing to do with the player. The timeline of Oblivion is basically all revolved around the player. Even the other events that unfolded in factions and other points besides the crisis. To me the story itself is even being streamlined for the masses.

well even in fantasy "earth" is used as a general term for "land".... but that would be akin to the thalmor saying they just want all men to fly and never put their feet on the ground :spotted owl: .

yeah, they slipped up. wouldnt be so bad if that wasnt like the single most repeated dialogue in the whole game.... seriously :shakehead: .

Blaming them kind of assumes that they have a personal hand in every single word in the game. The loading screen tips were probably hammered out late one night by some guy we never heard of, who was trying to add a little bit of polish and made a simple mistake.

Using the word Earth on Nirn is nothing new. Actually referring to Nirn as an Earth, or the Earth, is just wrong.

Fine, I'm gonna make my own Men planet! With blackjack...and hokers... In fact, forget the blackjack.

Earth is one of the names for our planet, but it has other uses as well that could fit here.

In the English language - as any dictionary will tell you - earth (small E) also refers to dirt, solid ground, dry land or the opposite of sky. Of course it's related to the planet's name but in context it simply refers to ground. In many other languages such as french (monde/terre, etc..) and Japanese (chikyu/suchi/tochi/riku) have multiple words depending on the context.

There's really no reason to substitute 'earth' with 'Nirn' except when actually referring to the planet as a stellar body. Outside of that it would just sound weird.

In russian the priest uses the word for earth that does not mean the planet but rather the ground. I'm pretty sure the American priest means the same thing when he says "earth"
I've also heard plenty of other NPCs use Nirn as the planet so some of you can quit saying that they're trying to dumb down the game

I play a sandbox space game called X (I have X2, X3: Reunion and X3:Terran Conflict while X:Rebirth is the only other game aside from Skyrim i have been looking forward to) and it does what you are suggesting be done here. Instead of using real-world English terms (such as small "e" earth, which has a different meaning to Earth) for measurements, it uses it's own system. And it's a disaster. Jazuras, stazuras, mizuras. After nearly four years playing the series I still don't know WTF is what. The original Battlestar Galactica did a bit of this too... and hearing the word Jahren instead of year might seem like a good idea, but it's not.

Using special terms for fictional or minor things is no big deal. But using them repeatedly for very specific real-world things is just plain irritating and, to be perfectly honest, linguistically abhorrent. Everybody in the game is speaking English. Everybody (almost) playing the game is doing so in English.

"What is the blorn?"

"When is Festivus?"
"Festivus will be held at estro kelon in Markarth on the fayn of kistter. Be sure to be on blorn, bring your waisna and be prepared to pronicate until the cahz rises over the jurelm".

I actually jumped a centimeter or two out of my seat when I first heard that. Skyrim handles lore MUCH better than OB did, but that Earth reference really caught my attention, especially in the context he used it in.

Or they could be, gasp!, expanding lore and accepting the fact that some people, who live on land which is also known by the world 'earth', as in the dirt you stand on, might not use such a formal name as "Nirn".

Personally, from the linguistics standpoint, 'Nirn' is actually really rather stupid to use if everyone is going to speak 'English' for every other word they utter. I haven't studied all the languages on Earth, or even a majority of them, but as far as I'm aware all the ones I've run into so far have used a word that describes the land we walk on. (Except for one, which translated to English as roughly "Sparkling Blue Gem splattered with Green". Really wish I could remember which culture that one came out of. Kind of cool they got it so right a few thousand years before we had space flight to see how true it was.)

Honestly, whenever I hear "X" mentioned in a game/book/movie, where X is a random made up word referring to the planet they are on, and it isn't a sci-fi--many-planets-are-known-and-traveled-to type deal, then to me it is basically someone slapping me in the face reminding me that they are trying to distract me from the fact that this isn't real.

Unfortunately not everyone reads the books in game or the lore in general, i really don't mind frankly.

I know the world is Nirn, one small bit of leeway towards new players not a problem for me.

I know!

And to the last post saying you dont mind them doing such because your not that into to lore , I say this . When I started playing , I had to learn some lore , then grew to love it . Part of the reason the elder scrolls series got this far is the lore , the fan dedication and when new people become fans it wraps them up . While I didnt want to rant about this , but have too say soemthing . The bottom line is that dumbing down will in the long run kill the fan base .
