Taste of Death, AKA: How I learned to accept cannibalism

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 1:00 pm

So I just completed Namira's quest, and boy I found that disturbing. I give props to Bethesda for making me squirm a little because of this quest. Everything about it was twisted. It itself was not that difficult nor long, but the little details such as the dog trainer's remarks and the source of the meat seller's meat was quite excellent. I found the design of Namira to be quite creepy as well, and when I figured out I had eaten not only verulus' flesh, but his bile as well I was kind of disgusted. I do applaud Bethesda for actually making me cringe a little. What were your reactions to this quest, and are there any others that you find equally or more so messed up?

I ended up killing the Cannibals and saving the Priest. Didn't get a Daedric Artifact or Numeria to speak, but I got 750 Gold from the Priest.

Answer below;

Spoiler

Markath hall of the dead.

As for the Q, that was pretty nasty in itself. I did it to check out the artifact, thought it was a bit pants, and decided to reload and just decapitate the cannabal before hand.

Namira's Ring. You (SPOILER) get a 50 point bonus in stamina and whenever you consume flesh you get a health and health regen bonus for 5 mins.

It's actually somewhat weak sauce, even speaking as a Sword and Board character.

The HP regen has been nice for tight spots. I don't see it lasting much longer, when I get enchanting higher.

The ring has proven useful for a couple of moments and is still my main ring at present. Note that if you kill the cannibals, you're killing quite a few Markarth merchants so watch out. Plus you get a useful companion if you kill the priest.

First I killed the priest so I could get the ring for the achievement and then I massacred everyone else.

This was the second daedric quest I did after Azura's Star, and I actually would have had no problem with my character partaking in the cannibalism aspect of it, but I felt really, really bad murder knifing the priest.

I still haven't even used the ring. On my next play through I'll probably kill all the cannibals and save the priest.

Well, being a Bosmer my character has no real problem with cannibalism. The Bosmer are religiously strict carnivores and cannibals. Still killed everybody after I got the ring though. Creepy fetishists. Didn't their mothers ever tell them not to play with their food? :P

I completed the quest and didn't kill any of the cannibals... I originally went through with it just for the artifact (gotta collect em all). Then read if you kill them all there are that many less citizens in Markarth. Plus all those who died in the Escape from Cidnha Mine quest leaves very few people in Markarth. My home is there and I would like to see it "alive" with people; even if those people are cannibals.

I had the exact opposite feeling. My home is there, and I rather prefer it to be a nice quiet little Dwemer town tucked away in the mountain instead of a bustling city full of people shouting. :hehe:

I loved the quest. I did find it very disturbing. I am role-playing a character who is a very conservative Dunmer Daedra-worshiper, so it was weird to see how far down the path of - well - sheer evil the quest took him. Basically he will do anything to please the Daedric Princes, so I went all the way and he's a somewhat reluctant member of the coven now. Really he still thinks cannibalism is pretty gross, but doing repulsive stuff is what Namira is all about. He gave the ring to Eola, and they are currently traveling companions. OK, OK, I admit it, I have a crush on her.

I do wish there was a way to be a cannibal without becoming a freaky cultist. It's just another day at the office for any Bosmer. But I made a whole thread for that http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1292520-cannibalism/. :)

The Molag Bal quest (also in Markath) is almost as disturbing, but not quite. The victim there is a real jerk to you, so it's a little easier to torture and murder him. But not much.

I also did the Vaermina quest somewhere near Winterhold. Not that disturbing, although not very nice either.

I haven't been able to bring myself to do this quest yet once I got to the second part. I want the Oblivion walker achievement.. but the thought of cannibalism turns my stomach.

I'm even a Bosmer and I can't make myself do it.

Good job Bethesda in writing a quest that actually scares me and leaves me feeling disturbed thinking about it.

I loved that quest. Eola is amazing, and to this day I use her as my companion. Also, I don't know about the rest of you, but I've always wondered what humans taste like. I wouldn't go around killing people to find out, but if it was delivered to me on a plate and I knew what it was, I wouldn't hesitate to give it a taste. Maybe it's just me, but that quest didn't scare me or disturb me at all.

It is quite a surprising feature for Namira, though. Before, she was just all about being ugly and wicked and wretched. I guess cannibalism being frowned on by people is right down her alley though. That must be why Eola is accepted by Namira, because she's definitely way too attractive to fit into the "ugly" category.

There's little incentive for pure warriors/thieves character to do most of the Daedric quests. Rewards are, most of the time, enchanted items that need constant recharging or with effect of little consequence. The only Daedric quest that gave me a satisfactory reward was Hircine's. And it also has an evil twist as you can take your hunter role... very seriously.
