Tatoo's being permanent/Sharing the body of Resitance and Se

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 3:42 pm

Just would like to get some peoples opinions on an issue that has actually really been getting under my skin above all things in Brink.

The first is tatoos and scars being permanent. I understand the realism arguement, I really do, but from a gameplay perspective, its just silly. Whats the point in selling a game on its customizable options, but restriciting players by cutting off a serious ammount of the customization after choosing an option is really counter productive. I actually wont use tatoos or scars anymore, I like to change up my character once I unlock new things or feel a different way. Its impossible with permanent stuff like that.

The permanent body stuff also contributes to my next big gripe, once you create your character, you use that character for both the Resisitance and Security sides. I made a nice clean cut security soldier, was enjoying him for quite a bit. I realized you actually could make a guy for both sides and I started outfitting him as if he was resistance. I threw on my DOOM tatoos and a nice face tatoo aswell ended up looking very badass. Then I realized, the tatoos went back to my clean cut Security guy aswell. It essentially ruined him and I was forced to make a new guy. It seems like such a silly system, tearing out the jugular of that gameplay for realism is stupid, its even more stupid considering that realism is taken away aswell when the game treats both your Security and Resistance guy like the same person.

I do enjoy the game, I plan on playing alot more, but I still do have alot more gripes with it. No face creation, a small number of voices, balance issues, no changing of body type ingame, lag, ect. ect. Theres quite a few problems with the game but I wont list them all here with the idea of keeping this post on a specific topic. Hopefully the devs will really look into their product and change some things seriously very soon.

I agree with the face limitation, I mean it's from Bethesda, they have two top games with the face customization, games where you would rarely look at your face anyway.

Don't understand your complaint.

I made two different characters, one for Res. and one for Sec. didn't have those problems.

This game is not from Bethesda they are only the publishers the ones who made the game are called splash damage...and the whole not being able to change is so that you would learn either your own play style or learn to adjust your play style for each match which is key to having a good team work at the end

stuff

Everything you said is right on. I had a similar problem the first night I played. Right after the game unlocked on STEAM, a buddy of mine kept bugging me on Vent to forget customizing my character and just jump into a game with him. I didn't realize until the next day that I was stuck with the same archetype as the Resistance on that character... Wouldn't have been a huge deal if I wasn't already level 7 by the time I noticed. Now my resistance version of that character is going to have to wear face gear at all times.

I also agree that in a game that promotes such wonderful customization, limiting the changes you can make TO THE WAY YOUR CHARACTERS LOOK is stupid. Whoever came up with the idea of not allowing faces/scars to be changed later on should be fired, as should everyone who agreed with them.

Splash Damage, not Bethesda. If it were Bethesda, all of the characters would look like animated corpses.

The OP means that you're stuck with the same archetype whether you're Security or Resistance on a single character. This limits the "customization." I, too, wanted a clean cut security officer and a crazy looking rebel, but I'm not able to, and this is a big deal because of the way experience points are spent - most (smart) people have individual characters for each class so that they can be specialized, so our Security soldier and our Resistance soldier both have to look the same.

You could just make 8 characters, like I think you're suggesting, but the problem then comes in with online play. When you sign into a server, you're sometimes not given a choice as to which side you will be on, and that's why you should be able to customize the different sides of one character as you see fit.

Yes, because my play style is so dependent on whether or not my character has bandages on their face... /sarcasm

Don't use Scar's or Tatto's for your Security Character, you need to make them look like Poster Boys, perfect and pristine, your resistance characters should have some major scars and defects.

Alright, I'm going to take this step by step for people missing the OP's point...

When you make a character, you can customize their clothing options for both Security and Resistance.

The reason you can customize clothing options for both Security and Resistance is because you will not be on one side or the other at all times with said character (like during online play where you often don't have the option of picking sides).

Making a character based on faction is stupid for both the above reason, and because, with limited points to spend on abilities, you can only truly specialize in 1-2 classes on any given character.

People that know what they are doing, make characters based on classes, not whether or not they will be playing on Security or Resistance.

You cannot change facial archetypes or scars between the two versions of a single character. Therefore, you cannot have a clean cut Security officer and a scarred up Resistance fighter as the same character.

Reading this topic suprised me a bit at first, but it does make sense to create characters based on class rather than Security or Resistance.
Still, I can understand that some people wish to use more extreme characters when playing as the Resistance, while keeping it clean for Security.

Ummm..Have you ever really tried to get rid of a scar or a tat on a whim? Not too easy. Changing clothes however is a regular every day occurrence...

But I guess ballooning from light to heavy and back again is much more realistic?

It's a bit silly. Both sides should be unique characters, even if they access the same stats, level and rank. Not sure what motivated them to do that.

Same thing with tats and scars. I can respec my character for one level of xp, but can't get rid of some ink? It's odd.

For myself, I went for loads of scars and a busted nose for my security guy. He's... not very good at his job :D

Yes! From a RPG gamer's perspective, this doesn't make sense! You keep the same scars/tattoos for both sides----but, why would a Security guy have a Resistance-like
tattoo or vice-versa? What if I wanted an innocent-looking Secruity guy and a scarred psychotic Resistance dude? They should be two different characters, really.

.....Unless my character has a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-hquOw6SSw, lol!

But, maybe this is why they give us different character slots? I think that could be a solution? Unless you like the class enough that you want a couple of pure-medics or something....?

His complaint is about how you customize your Resistance side char with tatts and scars but then you switch over to your Security side of that char and the tatts and scars still remain permanent, which doesn't match that chars background. So,what didn't you understand/

You two just need to come up with better backstories for your characters.

For the "glasgow smile" scar on your Security guy - maybe your guy got tortured after being captured by one of the more radical Resistance cells.

For tattoos, a simple "defection" story makes sense - they could have thought they were on the right side, then found that Security were too restrictive, or that maybe the Resistance are taking things too far after all - but that ink won't wash off too easy, now, will it?

Agreed. It's very simple, nothing should be permanent on the character in terms of looks.

I was kind of thinking that, too. (Fanfic ideas galore!) Actually, it could be a great part of story mode! It's like adding some more emotion and drama into it. It'd be almost a serious
drama TV show! So much potential.... :D

But what if people don't want a character that changes like that? Like, what if I wanted my clean-cut dude to always be a clean-cut dude regardless of
what happens?

EDIT: I guess the Devs want us to make our own stories in a way? Because our dude is sometimes just some dude with a gun in the background in a couple
of cutscenes, lol (haven't fully played the story mode).

Ooh, ooh! My dude could be a turncoat (for various reasons), have multiple personality disorders, or is possessed by a dead Resistance guy he tortured
and killed. Wheeeee! Stories are fun! :)

Well....

Why complain anyway...

Because even if i do i kickass Resistance character and i enter a freeplay...

IM fking stuck with a random skin ANYWAY. I can't even play with the character i builded. I was shocked when i captured a resistance post being able to look around and i saw my character clothed with some random stuff, different face and gears.

Why complain? lol

It is there where you are wrong sir, I've been on servers where I've been able to choose my side, in fact the game ensures that if your character is security, you will be on security, I'm playing on my security character and have not been part of the resistance yet.

It does place you on the team to best balance it out. It may try to, but really its like any other game, the team that needs you, gets you, regardless of your character choice.

I just cant get passed why they thought this was a good idea. One can create multiple characters, and thats cool and fine, you can choose the different archetypes and voices. If you want permanet tats and scars, ok, it isnt smart to cut off over a third of the customization options but whatever, but the realism of permanent tats and scars is thrown out when the game treats it like your character is actually on both sides of the thing. Making a crazy rebel that looks great is awesome! but online, you will be forced to play as security every now and then, and that character could look terrible. Its simply a bad design decision, nearly undesputably, it was a stupid thing to force on a player
