Telus Vs Shaw

Post » Tue Aug 09, 2011 4:17 am

I don't want to go into many personal details so here is a simple question.

I'm trying to decide between Shaw and Telus High Speed Internet. Are there any users that could provide convincing information on who I should run with? Thank you.

Canada, huh? I remember reading something about certain providers being more generous in their bandwidth caps, so whichever one that is.

How did you know I was in Canada? I suppose Shaw or Telus is a company in Canada only? I have no Idea about the rest of the worlds Internet provender’s. I guess Canadians might only be of help.

Edit: I think Shaw is only serviced in Canada. I have not found anything about Telus.

What price point are you looking for? Recommendations might change whether you're looking for $40 or $60 service. Also, do you already have TV or phone with one of them? If so, a bundle price can save a few bucks which can mean all the difference.

For their "basic" high speeds, here's the breakdown:

Telus: 6Mbps, 150GB per month, $39, $5 savings if bundled
Shaw: 7.5Mbps, 125GB per month, $49, $10 savings if bundled.

Given that Shaw costs $10 more, I'd say Telus is the better choice - you just have to decide whether it's more important to have more data, or to get that data faster.

If you jump up the price list, Shaw starts to look better, though.

I'm on Shaw, and haven't had any problems. Haven't looked into any other providers, though. The only complaint I have with Shaw is they have too frequent down or slow times due to upgrades and maintenance, but I suppose that's probably for the better.

At those two values, I'd say Talus is the better deal definitely. 1.5 mbits more under ideal circumstances doesn't outweigh 25 more gigabytes at all.

I assume at higher speeds, the cap also gets increased, yes? If not, higher speeds will just burn you through what you got faster.

Yep, the next up on both competitors' price lists have identical 15Mbps speeds and 250GB caps, with Telus being the cheaper option by $7, so still clearly in Telus' favor.

I've also generally preferred Telus' DSL to Shaw's cable because it seems slightly less prone to bogging down under increased user load at peak times.

Just do not sign a contract with Telus!!! I hate contracts!

Telus tried to get me to switch from Shaw. I may have saved a few dollars, and gotten a free Xbox360 but in the end, I was on the hook for 3 years. No thanks!

As to outages Shaw has been pretty good for me over the last decade. I could count the outages on one hand, and a foot. Telus is no better, just recently having a major outage here. (Saw it on the news.)
