I don't know why people are so shocked that this might be a possibility. Bethesda already has a HUGE fan base... now multiply that by $15/month...

Any MMO they make is going to svck, because MMO's svck. The greatest aspect of the TES series is the freedom a player has to impact the game world as they see fit, in an MMO you will not have this kind of freedom to do what you want.

Ultima Online tried this in 1996, it was an awesome game back then but they ended up taking all of the freedom away from players to cater to the carebear masses.

Of course they're not going to get every fan of TES, but they'll get plenty-- and then they'll get regular old MMO fans. If they pull it off, it'll be insane profits. I'm not saying I'm for it, I do like MMO's but I would hate to see Bethesda lose their niche in single player games... but like I said, it's not like it's really hard to imagine the possibility from a business standpoint.

Any MMO they make is going to svck, because MMO's svck.

Honestly, I'm getting tired of seeing all this speculation on MMO/co-op.

Its true, MMO's cater to the lowest common denominator and they limit player freedom. Bethesda should stick to what they do best, single player open world games.

Personal opinion, nothing more. Bethesda is a business, in the game of making profit. MMO's, when done right, generate ludicrous amounts of money. And "limit player freedom"? How so?

Very unsurprising given all the rumours.

I doubt it'll interfere with BGS' single player RPG development, so people who don't like the idea of a multiplayer TES game are worrying over nothing. Better a separate MMO project than a half-baked multiplayer mode tacked onto the main series.

I'm shocked that anyone thinks MMOs are good business. It's a waste of money. Unless thy name be Blizzard. Game over. I don't even care if you combined Conan, Warhammer, Luke Skywalker, and... Disney. It'll still be crap that falls apart within a year and becomes play-4-free.

"Of course, one man's feelings toward the genre aren't always enough to stave off corporate demands, but... "

"That doesn't mean Bethesda will forever abstain from MMOs, however. Bethesda's parent company,http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/zenimax-media, http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/zenimax-online-studios-builds-new-mmo-customer-support-facility/ in Ireland earlier this year, an indication that online gaming may very well be in the company's future."

You should probably read more than the title of an article...

Rift is still kicking, and Old Republic is wildly popular. So...

Read what I copied and pasted. If you're still confused, read it again. It says it's possible, so the article you linked disproves absolutely nothing. If anything, it only creates more suspicion.

Actually, if they were as bad business as you implied, then play-for-free would be a terrible business move; why would they keep their servers open for everyone if they could barely run it in the fist place for $15/mo? No, it's actually a sign that the MMO is doing well- they can afford to allow a lot of people skip on the subscription fee (and some game options) and get their money on the things that they do buy for the game.

Many of them squeeze by with making players pay for trinkets. They can't succeed with a full blown subscription model. Not for long at least. It almost seems like some intentionally get released this way. Try to ride on hype and do the subscription thing for awhile, then transition to the free2play model. There are so many like this. As for "servers", most of them don't have more than 5 live servers. Even less. They're digital ghosttowns.

No more MMO's for me. I had enough of that crap with WoW. I played that for 3 years starting with when it was first released. I got sick of the constant changes to the game world and the direction the game went in. It's all about making money and anything they can do to keep you busy so they can keep you playing. Eventually quality goes out the window, replaced by "tricks" to keep gamers involved while their wallets are bled. No thanks.
