Do you guys know any good text based games online? Preferably pre 1900's, but not medieval either.

Singleplayer, or multiplayer? Do you want something like Zork or a MUD?

I don't know much about single player ones - but http://www.mudconnect.com/ is a beautiful resource for MUDs.

People still play MUDs? Wow. Whatever floats your boat, though. Too much reading for me.

Personally I prefer the web based games though I miss some like Earth 2025. There weren't any graphics just pure text and required a good amount of strategy. Sadly the company that maintained it discontinued it due to stress of updating the code to a newer standard. Dark Galaxy wasn't text per say however it was text-like but the creator took it down in favor of making a new game.

AVGN did "review" of a word text game in his Dracula episode. http://youtu.be/sDR8HKC9wgI .

Pre 1900s? I suppose there are likely to be various Victorian pen-and-paper types around, dunno if they'll be online though. (I'm not actually being sarky for the record, I assume that wasn't a typo...)

Sometimes what I'll do is chat one of my friends on Facebook and I'll be like the dungeon master of a choose your own adventure :P Not sure if that's what you had in mind.

Example:

Me: "You wake up in a dark room, what do you do?"
Friend: "Turn the lights on"
Me: "The lights come on and you see a button, what do you do?
Friend: "Push the button!"
Me: "You are dead"
Friend: "wtf?!"

These are the only ones I know of .... although they are mostly medieval, so not really what you are looking for.

Gemstone IV was good although I liked Dragon Realms even more, they just added some small changes that made a big difference in game play. The big problem with these games .. in recent years I could play GS4 for hours and not see anyone else, DR wasn't much better :(

I played the crap out of http://http://www.achaea.com/ before I discovered Morrowind. Now that was a great MUD. I'm tempted to download the app for the MUD software on my IPad, just for nostalgia. It's a truly massive, amazing, lore filled world that should be converted to a full game. All the work is done except the graphics and coding.

You open the window at the back of the house and climb through. I prefer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bcmc7O59Ds4 to the text games though.

No way!
I was looking through them but never tried opening them from the outside as I assumed they'd be locked, I always tried kicking down the door or find and going in the basemant hatch.
