Texturing and the CK

This is about texturing with the CK and Texture Sets.

I have written step by step what I have done and want to kow if this is the correct way to do it? If not, what should I have done? Have I missed any steps?

Just for people's reference....This mesh I was working with was just a trial run to get things together, not my actual project Unique Taverns.

Once I can be sure that I have the correct method, then I finally will be able to get on with my project and will also put a step by step tutorial up on the WIKI for other folks like me who need things carefully laid out, step by step in english, in order to learn.


*I made a copy of the mesh 'farmintinnend01.nif'

*Placed the copy in a new folder.... 'DataFiles/meshes/UniqueTaverns'

*Opened up the CK and gave a new name to the existing Static 'farmintinnend01.nif', selected 'Yes' make a new object.

*I then edited my new item called 'UTfarmintinnend01.nif' to point to my copied mesh 'UTfarmintinnend01.nif'in the meshes folder.

*I want to change the textures, so I opened up 'TextureSets' right clicked and selected 'new'

*I gave it a name and selected the texture I wanted for the wall 'architecture\windhelm\whwoodbaseinterior01.dds'

*I then added it's matching file 'architecture\windhelm\whwoodbaseinterior01_n.dds' Then clicked 'okay' and it was saved.

*I returned to my item and opened it up....

*I found the section that corresponds to the wall and right clicked, selecting 'new'

*From the drop down box I selected my new texture set 'UTInntextures' and the model immediately changed to show the new texture from my Texture Set, that overides the original Texture Set.

I repeated the steps and created new texture sets and added them to the model for other sections.

I then placed my new model ingame and saved my mod. Ingame...

Have I missed anything, is this the correct method to swapping textures in the CK?


Edit..... to get the right screens in the right place.

Well the way yoiu did it is the way I have been doing same here and for FNV/FO3, can't think of something I do diff then you outlined (if do I'll post later) and I have not gotten the errors you are pointing out. last night I did about 20 variants and not an error 1 ... I do get ride of the normals though for the new textures still when leave don't get the error, only thing could suggest is see wht happens in game or ck out the nif in nifscope and look at texture refs there.

Thanks, I have since retexed many items in the CK with no errors, it turns out that I was mixing my models up....long complicated story. So I have it sorted now. lol

Having now textured a lot in Nifscope and in the CK, I have found it much easier and quicker to do it in Nifscope. However for the newbie that just wants to use the CK and not use Nifscope, we need a detailed tutorial that will get new folks swapping textures easily.
