For some reason, the Thalmor have sent a hit squad after me. As far as I know, I haven't made a move against the Thalmor, so I'm stumped as to why they're trying to off me. Is this part of a specific quest, or did I just get a negative rep with them?

Also, a Dark Brotherhood assassin tried to take me down. The encounter was a joke. The assassin showed up on radar a mile away and approached without a hint of stealth. What faction would stoop to hiring the DB?

These are generally random events which can be triggered by many different quests. Chances are you've upset SOMEONE on your travels.

The Thalmor hate you simply for being the Dragonborn. But I'm sure you triggered this through some quest.
