That destruction and desolated feeling.

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 11:31 pm

I dont know about you guys, but when I played Fallout 3, there was this great feeling of desolation that created an amazing atmosphere and immersion. But from what I've seen on FNV trailers and gameplays, the Mojave Wasteland looks more alive and full of life then Fallout 3, that's not a bad thing, but it gives me the impression that you will feel less alone in a place forgotten by humanity.

So my worry is, will FNV give me the same immersion provided by the atmosphere as FO3 did?

What do you think guys?

It won't. The west is a post-apocalyptic society now, not so much an empty wasteland.

The West Coast is more developed than the East Coast apparently.

In Fallout 1, there is farming, there isn't a green hue over anything, there's huge, bustling cities full of people(Hub, Bonetown), and the world just doesn't feel like it's a year after the Great War.

New Vegas will be a refreshing change from Fallout 3.

The Capital Wasteland is more desolate than the West Coast because, that's what you expect if a country have a load of nuclear and want to drop it on a country....
They will try to destroy the capital (Washington D.C is the capital of USA)..........
Spoiler
Plus, New Vegas is spared from nuclear strike because of bribery (http://http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/New_Vegas)..

So, we gonna expect a new, brighter, wasteland not as desolate as the Capital Wasteland (or it will be more desolate? There's a possibility..)
Mojave Wasteland, here i come!

I am happy about New Vegas being more alive then FO3. It's been 200 plus years. The West has huge farms and orchards. New Vegas is the middle ground. I am sure there will be alot of locations that have the desolate feeling. Such as Camp Searchlight
Spoiler
It was nuked by Ceasers Legion.
And Camp Forlorn Hope. Hoover Dam has been a battle ground between NCR and BoS, NCR and CL. I am sure it's going to have alot of depressed on edge people.

fallout3 did have great atmosphere but it was a bit too desolate and it was too destroyed, it made navigating kinda weird, downtonw dc area was too ful full of obstacles and the area near grayditch, or near red racer factory or by the citadel it was just to odestroyed in a lot of areas, the towns were too small, there wasn't a lot of buildings you could enter either, it did have some good indor areas like the capitol builoding or the roosovelt acedemy but if still need way more houses , apartments , small stores etc we could actually enter, so for replay fun, ithink new veags is gonna be better.

I'm happy that it's alive again. One can only handle so much dead and brown.

This. I got tired of the Waste part of Wasteland pretty quickly, but missions and such kept me going.

As beautiful as the ambient soundtrack is, theres only so much brown and brown you can take before you are tempted to just end it and jump off of Tenpenny Tower.

I loved the way the capital wasteland looked but craved more society and more of a lived in feeling.

If New Vegas is just as big as FO3, I'm just hoping it doesn't feel quite as devoid of human life.

New Vegas's size is bigger than that of Fallout 3's size.

I was wondering if there will be any large city ruins like DC. Probably not. I love the wasteland, but I still love the ruined cityscape as well. I hope there's somewhere like that to explore.

That's what she said!

But seriously, in regards to the OP, although there is more agriculture and civilization in the smaller towns and there is a fully functional NV Strip powered by the Hoover Dam, both not directly hit by the bombs, the "Mojave Wasteland" is still a desert.

Sure there may be some green flora and a bit more fauna but it should still be far from lush, after all it is still a desert and there should be more desert in that area than anything else giving you that wasteland feel...

The map size is exactly the same, and the secondary locations may not be any "bigger" than those in Fallout3 as both companies put alot into secondary locations. We do know there are tons more quests, more dialogue and overall more things to do in FNV, so in that respect it will be a longer game.

I really loved that desolate, lonely feeling of the Capital Waste. Am going to miss it.

I think that while the Mojave will be more rebuilt than the east, when wandering alone through a blistering desert, vultures (mutated) circling overhead, your near empty canteen bouncing on your hip, you`ll feel very alone.

Well I think it fit for Capital Wasteland.
I mean, not every area is the same right?
Capital Wasteland is the worst place to live in the fallout universe.
It has huge amounts of creatures, tons of feral ghouls, poverty, water-problem (prior to Broken Steel), tons of raiders, Outcasts, a new breed of super mutants tons more durable than their west coast counter parts, the land was dead (the dirt, probably why no one could farm anything), has faction wars going on (regulators and talon company) etc.

It fit for CW.
It is now declared the worst place to live.
But it should stop there.
Sure destruction should be all around us but rebirth should be too.
And desolate? No thanks.
With people trying to rebuild the world in their own different ways I'd rather not have it as empty as it was in Fallout 3. (Compare Goodsprings and Megaton to each other)

Well I have to agree in some points, and disagree in others.

Yes, New Vegas is going to probably going to be more lively than it should be during the end of the world. But it will be kind of a cool change to actually be able to go from barren, to pre-war.

Yes, I agree that Fallout 3 had TOO much barren areas. I mean, for the capitol, I would expect to see something every where I went. When I was in the Fairfax Ruins, I just felt it was TOO small to be a major city, then the game made the city feel too barren. The surrounding area of most of the cities is just plain out barren, and there should at least be some unaccessible buildings and homes, and cars, etc.. filling up the gaps. I doubt West Virginia has so much open land. To me, I think Point Lookout had the perfect amount.

I know what you mean @ OP. I loved the endless brown/grey.

One of my favorite things about FO3 was just walking around the desolated wasteland finding little easter eggs and kiling waste landers/animals.
Another thing we're forgetting here too is that the capital wasteland was previously VERY vegitatated and green, but became a desert. The mojave desert has always been a wasteland, so that kinda takes away some of the novelty of it.

Even thought NV looks less desolate I think we're still gonna get that broken world post apocalyptic feel.

Until the rebirth of Vegas in the 80's and 90's, the area around Las Vegas was pretty desolate, even if you were just a few miles from the strip. However once outside of the valley that Vegas is in, there is a huge distance between towns where all you see are cactii and creosote bushes and jack rabbits even today.

So, desolation should be the norm, but not because of the destruction, just because it is a desert and not densely populated.

I'd expect the towns to be functioning settlements, rather than the besieged ruins that Fallout 3 had. But the desert in between is probably going to be just as dangerous and lonely as that ridiculous craggy mountainside that made up 75% of Fallout 3.

More old west and less I am Legend crossed with Mad Max, basically.
