The 2011 Video Game Awards

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 9:04 am

It's slowly creeping towards that time of year again, when the world will find out which games it considers to be the best of the best of 2011. There are 27 categories this year, ranging from the Game of the Year all the way down to the Best Song in a Game, and everything in between. More info can be had here:

http://www.spike.com/events/video-game-awards-2011

Let's just start off saying, the early years of the VGAs svcked. If you've never watched them, be glad you haven't. They were horrible, the hosts were bad, the show was bad, and it didn't even seem the show was made for gamers. Lately though, the VGAs are becoming a legitimate awards show the industry recognizes and embraces, so if you haven't seen them lately tune in, each year the VGAs are getting better and better. http://www.spike.com/articles/zbeldj/video-game-awards-meet-the-vga-2011-advisory-council, made up of editors from the top gaming websites/magazines in the industry.

The host has yet to be announced, but is described as a combination of celebrity and gamer. I know, good hints right. <_<

This years VGAs will be shown live on December 10th, airing simultaneously on Spike and MTV 2, and will be streamed online at Spike.com too.

Now, you might be saying to yourself awards are good and all, but what else does the VGAs bring to the table. Well, lucky for us, like I said earlier the industry has started to embrace the VGAs. How? World Premieres.

Last year's World Premieres were huge, and included games like:

  • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Batman: Arkham City
  • Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
  • Portal 2
  • Mass Effect 3
  • Forza Motorsport 4
  • Prototype 2

This year there are supposed to be 10 exclusive World Premieres, including the new Alan Wake, Metal Gear Solid Rising, and an unannounced new project from BioWare. Additionally, viewers will see exclusive footage of Rainbow Six: Patriots, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, and Bioshock: Infinite.

There are two viewer voted categories this year too, http://www.spike.com/events/video-game-awards-2011-voting/voting/most-anticipated-game and http://www.spike.com/events/video-game-awards-2011-voting/voting/gametrailers-com-trailer-of-the-year.

So, do you guys love the VGAs? Are you watching this year? Wanna discuss your picks?

Not particularly interested in the awards themselves, but Metal Gear Solid: Rising news is enough to make me tune in, especially with the rumors of Metal Gear Solid 5 making the rounds. I'm curious to see what's going on with both titles.

I enjoy watching the VGAs, but last year was really awkward with Neil Patrick Harris hosting and no one laughing at his jokes.

Also, a lot of people seem to think that whoever wins GotY from Spike is the definitive one. It's always cool to see announcements and trailers though.

Yeah I didn't like him at all, I'd like to see Jack Black myself.

I am very disappointed in the nominees for GOTY. Big time!

GTTV talked about some. The 4th part in the show.

I mainly watch the VGAs for the announcements and previews, not the awards themselves.

As for the GOTY? Winner: Dark Souls.

If Skyrim doesn't win, the VGAs can go to hell. <_<

Skyrim, MW3, BF3, Uncharted and GoW3 are all going to win titles.

Also, did anyone find out why Skyrim wasn't nominated for Best Original Score?

I won`t actually watch it, but I enjoy voting for things. Looking for something to vote for in the Peoples Choice Awards, as always, was a horrible experience.

I voted for Gears of War 3 whenever it came up and I was severely disappointed when SPAZ wasn`t nominated for best Indie game. The VGA`s won back all of its points and more by nominating Claudia Black for best human female in a game. I haven`t played Uncharted, but I am completely in love with Claudia Black.

Not a big fan. As people tend to say, it is more of an extended commercial for the popular games than it is an actual award show. I do like that they will be announcing some new things from Bioware there, as well as the next game in the Alan Wake series. :D

Bioware's going to announce their new game at the VGA's right? Have there been any hints aside from that one screenshot?

The new game is made by Bioware LA, the studio responsible for Dragon Age Legends the facebook game, and there are rumours for a Mass Effect facebook game by the same studio.

They just couldn't let 4 be the Solid series' rambly, non-sensical conclusion, could they? :shakehead:

As long as I get more good games out of it I'm not complaining. :P

I don't like previews at all, not for movies, not for video games, really not for anything. So this awards show is annoying to me.

Why don't I like previews? Because they tend to ruin the actual experience when something is released.

I find that I have that "WOW response" before I can play the game, then I usually build up the experience in my mind and inevitably the game/movie seems to be a let down.

However when I go in cold, I can simply let the experience unfold. It's much more enjoyable.

Madden NFL and Oblivion both won GOTY from the VGA's.

I've already done my voting. Spike VGAs always give awards to deserving games. Last year's was RDR I believe, so yeah. Also, Build That Wall (Zia's Theme) is easily the best on the list.

I voted just now, was sad that Halo wasn't on the trailer either... oh well Assassin's creed's trailer was cool.

Most of the stuff I don't care about, just want to see some Halo news :) and hopefully see Battlefield beat Call of Duty. And if I were to guess what the game of the year for them would be, or any one with a clear mind would be Batman Arkham City, or Skyward Sword.

Not really a second Alan Wake, but I've heard it's a bridge between the first and second (which has been rumored and has also appeared in an artist's resume.)

On topic, I'm excited to watch the VGAs because of both the previews and the show. I only like the show because I like big events like that, where a lot of people are watching. I've also voted.
