The Always-On And Beth Forums Breach

Post » Sat Aug 13, 2011 10:36 pm

I know this may not directly be about the game's discussion - but here's a good reason.

But the association comes that this recent forum database breach on 12 August is probably the consequence of the recent http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-10-id-software-on-always-on-internet-debate.

Just to let Bethesda and Community managers know --- one who did it - probably did it because of that eurogamer article - so cheer up and i think you guys learned something.

I know i have been vocal about this in the other thread but heck I was angry because this unnecessary comment by Mr. Willits that broken the perfect marketing campaign - and i am very looking forward to this title - keep supporting this forum as much as i can and to see that filled over with negativity is sad.

Diablo 3 protesting guys associated Willits with RAGE obviously because he made a lot of id software and RAGE interviews.

I will not comment on Always-On directly because that's Diablo 3 which has NOTHING to do with RAGE nor id Software - totally different genre.

That's the pipeline, and the result is obvious.

RAGE has passively suffered because of that stupid Eurogamer Diablo 3 Always-On interview.

A nice article-comment from some random guy:

How can he possibly know the internet availability of every fan? My brother and parents live in a neighborhood 30 minutes from Baltimore city and have NO highspeed internet available, no cable, no DSL, no fiber optic. Just this year they were finally able to get a 3g adapter, but gaming on 3g would be really rough considering the bandwidth limitations, latency, and the fact that 3g in their area is spotty making an "always on" connection impossible.

"It would be 'better for everybody' "
- I agree, now... can you provide me with an always on internet connection, free of charge, without any outages?

"I'm a big proponent of always connected"
- True

" I'm always connected."

- True

"Our fans are always connected."
- False

Thank you, I hope this get's properly notified and used as a lesson.

------- POLL Comments:

Those may look unnecessary but quite a lot people didn't bother to look around and make sure - they still come on froums thinking RAGE will have always-on. This is not a big deal but atleast that would help newcomers to calm down ... there will probably be guys that will see the news later and then come here with a big wtf.

Don't you think its a bit of a stretch to instantly link the recent hack with Tim's comments and Diablo 3's always on?

You do know that Hackers go after targets they hit before because usually the pace at which companies upgrade their security is usually slow and they are still vulnerable?

gamesas's forums where hit before by the LULZSEC group, and likely guys that where part of that group and that possibly formed their own groups have done so again.

Just a thought.

Edit:

Also Rage is going to be using Steamworks for Activation. http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1219542-why-mr-willits-why/page__view__findpost__p__18321192

I know how I feel about that yet.

Atleast it's a confirmation finally, so we're not juming around with speculation.

I can bare the SteamyPileofSteam but please for god sakes let me know about the x64 version which has modding tools - didn't understood what carmack meant with "the modding tools are only included in the 64 bit version, which is not what we're shipping, probably release after the fact" ... what fact ... where when how ? I don't intend to get Carmack into trouble - incase this was really a slip out.

That announcement was an official response so i think that counts what this thread was about ---

As they said in quakecon community managers panel - "sometimes it never's goes according to plan", Let's blame Activision for this bad luck :hehe:

But come on, it could have been preventable. Those comments from Willits were like a cherry on top of the cake ... the fire went off and he thought it's okay to spill gasoline on it. << Every parent should learn their kids this is a bad idea.

You could pour that gasoline on an burnt out fire ... like atleast 2-3 weeks after the Diablo3 news - and backed with the mentioned "no always on for RAGE" confirmation would have done it quite significantly better.

Well I wish idTech5 was more mod friendly in the first place, most mods will just be maps using Rage's own stuff, and they'll feel like extra missions and such. Carmack talked in his keynote about the huge complexity and work that goes into making your own materials to create things for idTech5, and if anyone makes anything that looks as good as Rage itself, it will take quite some years... and anywho, he said they're not really opening up to being as mod supportive as they used to be, and might never be there again, which he didn't mind.

So I'll obviously be glad to play and download mods, but I wish they'd try to make it easier for people to make things from scratch and add in, it used to be so easy, and I want to play mods don't just feel like more Rage, Doom3 has some mods that are totally different from the game and fun

Anywho this stuff I just saw on Carmack's keynote, doesn't mean it'll be that way, just found it interesting, I'll still look forward to playing mods and still looking forward to being wrong about the mods :)
