The best e-reader is. . .

Post » Fri Jul 29, 2011 11:55 pm

. . . I don't know. That's what I want to find out. I'm just looking for some feedback is all.

--

For the past couple of days, I've done a little reaserch. The current products I've kept my focus on are -- Amazon's The Kindle 3, Barnes & Nobles Nook, and Sony Reader (though as outdated as it may be) -- and I am leaning towards the Kindle 3, mainly because it's the only e-reader available on the market that offers a keyboard -- no touchscreen. And that's the only reason I'd take a Kindle over everything else. Some may see that as a negative. I don't. I'm big on jotting down little notes while I read, so it's a win in my book -- I can't imagine trying to do that with a touchscreen.

And if I were to. . . compare; (strickly between Nook and Kindle) price, size, weight, and battery life, these two are pretty much on par with each other.

And hell, some even consider throwing the iPad in the mix, and in my opinion, it's a terrible choice. I mean I heard it's fine for PDF files and comics, but as a dedicated e-reader, I just find it a little heavy in my hands. And it's not even an e-reader; it's a tablet.

*wonders why some close friends told him to go with an ipad instead of a Nook*

What about you guys? Please, share your experiences with these devices. I don't necessarily want to abandon hardcover/paperback books, but I do want to insert myself into the wonderful world of e-reading as well!

I'm in love with my Kindle. Its light, its very easy on the eyes, has great battery life, etc. Like you, I'm a big fan of a physical keyboard, and the Kindle's is nice. It's also pretty resilient for such a little thing, mine's not scratched yet and it survived a fall earlier today. I also prefer the Kindle on purely aesthetic grounds.

If money is an issue, the Kindle with "special offers" is $25 cheaper than the Nook. The "special offers" are an add as the screensaver and a small banner one on the home page. Given that I hardly ever see the home page and couldn't care less about what my screensaver is, I think its an excellent deal.

I detest e-readers they are an abomination. They kill off reading of a good old-fashioned paperback. One thing is immensely enjoyable.

I love my iPad, but only because most of my reading is in comic form.

They won't, and so what if they do?

This is like coming into a thread about which RPG one should play and declaring that all RPGs svck and are killing off the puzzle game genre.

Uhh, not really.

It's more like saying digital game downloads are killing off that satisfying feeling of pushing a game disc into your dvd tray. :P

I love my Kindle, though I'm not sure how well the note taking features work, I haven't used them myself. I'd gladly lose the keyboard for another inch of screen. Battery life is great. Trying to read a PDF usually doesn't work out to well though, the screen just isn't big enough. http://calibre-ebook.com/ usually does a decent job of converting them to something else, but it depends on how the PDF is formatted.

Oh boy, another one of those "I like the smell of real books" people. I read books for, you know, the words the author writes. Guess I'm crazy. :whistling:

I'm honestly not fond of any of the current e-readers. If I were to choose one, it'd probably be the Nook (Nook Color to be precise).

Of tablets, the Asus Transformer holds my interest quite well.

To be fair, some of us prefer real books for different reasons. For example, as a college student I prefer bringing real books to read in my free time on campus. Between my laptop and my cell phone I don't really need another expensive gadget that can get lost, stolen or broken.

That being said, my dad has a Kindle and my mom has a Nook. Given the choice, I like the feel of the Kindle a lot better, but I'm not ready to pick up an E-reader of my own yet.

Well sure, that is a vastly different stance then saying they are an abomination that kills off real reading an cannot be enjoyable.

I'd get a tablet just to have something more versatile.

The kindle, the ipad may be a better all round tablet but for reading books the kindle is better. Its much cheaper too and has a keyboard on it. I don't have one but we bought one for my grandad so being the tech savvy person in the family I looked into it. I prefer actual books myself though. I mean I've tried reading books on other peoples tablets and I just can't do it, for me it has to be a book.

I like my kindle because of all the good things listed in Lady Nerevar's first post. Only problem I have with my it is that I could never get a Russian-English dictionary to work, which is annoying when you want to read in Russian and your major obstacle is limited vocabulary. :/ Pop up definitions don't seem to work because of the non latin alphabet, or something like that.

I don't really like the screen of the ipad for reading but many people do, it's probably just a question of preference.

this is becoming an argument real fast... honestly, I think it is starting to take over the reading industry and I do likethe feel of holding a book and telling how long it will take me to finish by picking it up. This is strange since I am the type of person that takes every root that makes my life easier, but some things, i just stay put on. if it comes to it, i may start printing my books and reading them...
