The Black Star - now absorbing any soul, any size.

Post » Tue Jun 19, 2012 10:25 am

Post 1.4 patch/Hi Rez Textures: The Black Star is now absorbing souls of any size, both animal and human. This is 1000 times more irritating than the textures screwed up by the Hi Rez pack.

Not really happy with the other soul gems now accepting undersized souls either, but that is a whine, not a bug.

This was already a bug pre-1.4.

Hmmm, that might be, as I only recently stopped carrying regular Soul Gems.

Mine always absorbed any soul (assuming it was empty. If this counts as one of the worse bugs for you then your game must be running pretty sweet! :)

that is normal behaviour - if you don't want your Black or Grand souls gems to absorb petty souls, either
1) Don't cast Soul Trap on lower souled creatures

or

2) Have a supply of empty petty/common/lessor/greater gems on habd

Yes I have to really commend gamesas on this game; out before Christmas, super stable on my PC right out of the box (I preordered), and fairly few quest bugs/quirks which I've been able to either catch early enough to load a save and avoid or workaround with the console. The only other pre-cristmas release I have that was this stable is Batman Arkham City. Every other pre-christamas release I've played was supper bugged as usual on initial release. Probably helped that I built a new game PC last September...

I still can't believe I've been 100% perfect carrying all sizes of empty soul gems until now (370 hours played)...

Do you mean you cann't see what soul is in it when you recharge a weapon?....because you can more or less, when looking at the gauge...
When enchanting the enchanter allways tells what kinda soul is in the gem...
What is the annoyance here? I realy do not understand... :-(

The complaint seems to be that it's capturing souls of ANY creature from lowlly Skeevers on up.

Thing is though, that's how Azura's Star is intended to function. Absorbing any soul and having to be careful when casting soul trap is the trade off of having a reusable Soul Gem.

For the Black Star, not sure. But I wouldn't even call this a bug (If it is one) to get bothered about. Just use the soul in it and be more careful with soul trap. You won't lose the Star.

Yes, it was exactly the same in Oblivion.

This was never a significant problem for me - you can either use up the soul promptly to empty it again or carry plenty of smaller soul gems for weaker souls.

Uh, the OP is talking about the Black Star, not Azura's Star. The main difference between the two is, Black Star is supposed to only be able to capture black souls, and can't handle white souls, vice versa with Azura's Star

Wrong. Azura's Star and the Black Star are exactly the same EXCEPT that the Black Star can ALSO capture "black" souls (player race souls) in addition to "white" souls. That is the only difference between the two. Both AS and BS follow the same rules as all other soul gems. The game will try to fit the soul into the appropriate gem. If there is no empty soul gem that matches the soul, it will put the soul in the next higher empty soul gem. So if AS or BS are the only empty soul gems you have, and you soul trap a skeever, it will place that soul in AS/BS. If you have the Black Star and attempt to soul trap a Grand "White" soul, it will fill the Black Star just as it would Azura's Star. The game will try to avoid putting a white soul in a black soul gem (and the Balck Star), but if it is the only empty soul gem available, it will fill it with whatever soul you trapped.
