The BLACKSCREEN

I'm running a PC, XP SP 3 and installed FNV the day it was released. After solving the Filing problems by not allowing Steam to access the Network after the first 6 hours of saves seemed to be lost, I've accumulated over 72 hours of gametime, most of it running without problems.
I bought another FNV for my wife and she loaded it and registered it etc. When she tried to start it, after getting the start window if she selected "PLAY" it instantly caused her screen to go black.

I thought the problem might be with her old Nvidia 9500GT drivers so I downloaded Nvidia's latest driver (6.05_nvidia_system_tools.exe) and installed it on her system. It did not help at all.

Thinking, "I should update my Nvidia driver and as I just downloaded the latest and greatest I'll install it on my computer. BIG MISTAKE!

After installing the new Nivida driver and attempting to start the game my computer instantly goes to a BLACK SCREEN when I attempt to start the game just like her's does.
Figuring it must be the new driver I deleted all of the Nvidia drivers etc that the download had installed and reloaded the older driver that had been running my GeForce GTS250.
It did NOT fix the instant black screen problem so now I have over 70 hours invested and I can't even start the game, let alone get access to my saved games.

I should add that as of this minute FALLOUT 3 is still playing just as good as it has been for the past year so the 3D Graphics seem to be working just fine.

As screwy as nVIDIA's drivers have gotten the last three years, when you have any suspicion at all that they are bad, run a driver cleaner in between in order to clear out any trace of the old (defective) driver. The Geforce driver can disrupt all manner of things, such that it's possible a game reinstall may become necessary. During the past eleven days or so, there have been a couple of thousand Geforce owners having game problems who have visited this forum. Why the Gefrces to a greater extent than Radeons, we do not yet know. Mostly, we've seen this with Windows 7, 64 bit, and there are at least a half dozen work-arounds of various kinds you can find with the search.

This is a user to user place, where gamers ask other gamers for suggestions. There is no official support here. That is found elsewhere (read the pinned thread about that).

I had some similar problems with my 7900GS laptop card. I got a black screen that wouldn't go away, unless I loaded an old save and typed "cal" into the console. Doing just one was not enough. If you recently added any mods I would recommend removing them. I removed all the mods I had recently installed and have yet to receive another black screen.

It is also worth noting 6.05_nvidia_system_tools.exe is not the latest display drivers, not sure if that is causing issues but that is the Nvidia System Tools from 2009!
Who knows what that left behind.

Try the current display drivers, it has an option to do a clean install, worth trying at least.
I had a search but cant see a fix noted anywhere for this issue :/

Does it launch in Windowed mode out of interest?

Well, after digging around I think I found something that works to start both my wife's new FNV and my old one. Remember, I'm running Windows XP sp 3 so this may not work on other systems.

Basically, I tried both starters that are hidden deep in the depths of Steams folders.
The route for my discovery is

My Computer > C Drive > Programs > STEAM > Steam Apps > common > Fallout New Vegas > Fallout NV Launcher.exe OR Fallout NV.exe Click on one or on the other one of these last two icons and keep your fingers crossed.

The reason I say to pick one or the other is because on my wifes new, never been run before FNV, the "Fallout NV Launcher.exe" started her system without a hitch. It did not work on my previously run game.
On my previously run game the "Fallout NV.exe" worked for me.

After I found the exe that worked I created I used the right mouse button to create a Link to the program that worked and moved it to my desktop. By clicking on it THE GAME STARTS!!!

I had to allow Steam to be on line to get either of these to work but, as of this moment both of the games are running and more importantly to me, I did not loose any of my hard saves and they are still working.

Hope this helps someone out there.
