Well I just recently retired one of my guys.
Being the nerd I am I thought up and wrote out a little bit of text explaining what happened to him and what happened after.
I would be very interested to hear the community's own epitaphs of your beloved characters!

Gilders last test, the great tribulation that all destruction mages must endure, the Power of the Elements.
The students say he seemed slightly anxious in the days prior, which was strange for he was normally very calm of spirit.
Some have stepped forth he confided of visions he experienced. Horrible visages, wreathed in fire that choked him with sweat at night and clouded his mind in the day.
Dreams of heat. Nightmares of engulfment.

He left on the fourth of Morndas of Suns Dusk.
That was 3 years ago. He has not been heard from since.

His legacy lives on though. He fought hard to educate the people about the truths of magic, and to embrace and treasure it, not scorn or hate.
As a result of his work the College has seen a steady increase in the number of enrolling students, a growing number of which are nords.
As well he accumulated a great number of powerful and important artifacts from around Skyrim. He thought it best they remain at the College, out of the reach of hands that seek to do harm and for open and free public enjoyment and education.

In the courtyard where the statue of Savos Aren stands, a small plaque reads:

Gilder Oceano
His weapon was knowledge.
The enemy, ignorance.
