The Dead Is Dead Thread

Post » Sat Jun 18, 2011 8:57 am

Since the thread has morphed into more of a general dead is dead playthough recap thread rather than a poll asking if anyone has done one, I have changed the name. We already have a winner for the vanilla game playthrough, but there's still the trophy for the I ain't afraid of no stinkin' DLC playthrough and one for the most glorious death.

An update on my current pc: Billy Mays Hayes is mostly doing the same stuff he's been doing all along. Prospecting, exploring, hunting, some special order side quests and some housekeeping (he finally got the sunset sasparilla factory cleaned. (i used console commands to remove all the debris.) It's acutally a kinda nice place now.) He's about to have Veronica set up shop at the 188 (she didn't want to be stuck in freeside, so no Van Graf shop open yet.) as soon as Billy gets the BOS to let him replace veronica and supply them himself. He'll try to hire more folks soon, either boone or arcade, and will soon go to Zion for the ingredients for homemade sunset sasparilla.

So how's your DID playthrough going? And if you haven't done one yet, my challenge still stands: Give one a try. See how far you can get or how tough you can make it before you succumb.

Kyrie level 17 SND.

Kyrie has been wondering around picked up a new toy (That Gun) and is about to finish up the mission to send idiot ghouls into space...and their inevitable demise.

nothing really big happening and haven't almost died recently but that will probably change eventually.

Mexican junkie that uses explosives, melee, and unarmed.
Very hard difficulty and hardcoe mode.

Almost died in Bison Steve's, but I ate some steak and mantis and beat them to death with a tire iron. :mohawk:

Sulla, Legion Frumentarius, Level 13. (play time 31.15.48)

Melee/EW/Sneak
8,9,5,2,7,9,5.

Intense Training (3)
Finesse
Strong Back
Super Slam

Weapons of Choice: modded Laser Rifle, YCS-186, Chances Knife, Ripper.
Armor of Choice: Van Graff Combat Armor and Ranger Helmet, or Wasteland Doctor Fatigues and Lucky Shades.

Dead is dead.
Playing on hard.
Playing on hardcoe.
I can only repair items when in front of a work/reloading bench or a tool box, and never in the presence of enemies (no blips on compass).
I can only heal via stims when in battle.
I can only heal limbs in a safe location (no blips on compass).
I can only fast travel from a fast travel location.
No companions.

Went from Accepted to Idolized by the Legion when I handed in 61 NCR dog tags. Vilified by the NCR, but they don't attack me on sight. Disappointing, but it will make messing with them easier. Got the Legion Safehouse and moved my base there. Atticus stole some of my water, so I put a fresh apple on the coffee table upstairs. If he eats it, he dies. Just ran the Boomers gauntlet, and I'm in Nellis. They almost killed me, so I'm not in a very friendly mood.

Yeah, he's so different from my usual characters with balanced stats (and using guns) that it's like a completely different game. And playing very hard with D.I.D. makes it pretty different too. It's actually nice for a change. :celebration:

That's exactly what playthroughs like these are for. Expanding your boundries, trying something new. I used to love Arturo Fuente Double Chateau cigars. It was just about all I smoked. Then my tobbaconist successfully got me to join his cigar of the month club. Each month a new free cigar......of his choosing. I tried many different cigars I would never have tried. Then one month the cigar was this funky brazillian in a green box. Brazillian? What do they know about cigars? Now that funky brazillian in the green box is the cigar I buy by the box. Took one puff and never looked back.

Trying a new RPG playstyle is just like my cigar club. There's some good, and some bad, but every now and then, you hit on a winner you would never have tried otherwise.

Junks just about bit it. Those grenade rifles aren't very friendly.

Saw the raiders from a little ways out and decided to try and get closer, maybe get a few shots in before they caught on. Too bad my guns skill isn't even 25.

They caught on and started lobbing those grenades down from the cliff, hitting me and all their comrades. Had exactly one little health square and managed to limp my way behind the bus and heal up using every stim and food I had. Then I hoofed it to Wolfhorn to put myself back together.

Gosh. :pinch:

EDIT: Cool story gunny, it is similar. Nice metaphorical thinking.

Thanks. I'm in a waxing metaphorical mood today.

Luckily for my character, Billy had just decided to trust his new robot pal's sensors (which correctly identified the threats on the road to Nipton, which Billy ignored to his close demise) and followed the warnings of hostiles in the hills just after the state line. Up Billy went into the hills to find..............Not grenades raining down, but.......Bighorners. So Billy had his first money hunt. After killing all the bighorners and dressing the carcasses, he came over the hill from the other direction to the raider ambush, trusted Ed-e's sensors again, and reversed the ambush. Also, I don't like fricken getting rained on by fricken grenades. So I might have meta-gamed a bit there. Sue me. :celebration:

Jonah has made it to Novac and met a sniper with a grudge against CL even greater than his. On the way I was once again completely crippled forcing me to hobble all the way to Dino inorder to acquire a doctors bag. (one would think that wasteland doctors/medics would either be more abundently placed or atleast travel with merchant caravans)

update: made it to camp gulf for a drink of water. Vipers with grenade rifles are proving to be very dangerous to my health,........still Jonah lives on lvl 9 and growing
Boone and I may have to do something about the Viper situation as soon as we can track down some sort of base of operations. Also I seem to be traveling in the same direction as the man in the checkered coat. It would seem that we may get to have discussion not involving a gun.

I think iam going to adopt the no fast travel accept from travel locations, and never when crippled, instead of simply no fast travel. The game can get a little tedious running across the wasteland when there is no hostiles.

Han just died. While he did shoot first, the Van Graffs shot second.... like, twenty times.

Sanosuke is going strong, like always. Can't put that kid down. Saved the tribals of Zion, stopped Elijah at the Sierra Madre, and is opening a can of whup-ass on the Deathclaws at the Quarry. Good thing he knows the Takedown, otherwise, he'd be screwed.

Alright, I have regained my confidence after failure and have created my second character on this challenge.

Jester- SPECIAL: 5 9 6 5 7 5 3 Tagged skills: Explosives, Survival, and Unarmed (the first time in my entire time playing New Vegas)

He just found a sheriff for Primm and is heading to the Mojave Outpost. Nothing eventful yet.

Alright, I'm currently level 8. I made it just roughly before Novac. I've had 2 close calls so far where I almost died.

1. I was running from the Mojave outpost to Nipton (I hate this whole road) and got jumped by a nice little group of 4 nightstalkers. I was screaming and yelling like a little girl and just managed to kill them. Ended up with 5 crippled limbs (torso, both arms, both legs) and probably around 60hp. Was pretty intense to.

2. I got jumped (again) by a nice little group of radscorpions. The small ones were no problem for fourty two and his cowboy repeater but the giant radscorpions were to much. So I ran like a little girl to the Mojave outpost and got them to aggro Mr. Patrol man and we killed them :D I think I had about one more hits worth of hp before I woulda died.

I'm not gonna lie, when I know I can't die, [censored] gets more intense. I love it :hubbahubba:

EDIT: Oh right, I forgot. I got jumped by some Vipers with grenade launchers, not fun, not fun at all. Damn near almost died there to. Really hard to see them when your perception is like 3 without glasses (For roleplaying reasons, part of my backround story thing)

If this was vanilla / back in the day, I probably have already done it by complete and utter accident. No joke, vanilla is that easy to me.

If I were to try it on my game now, I would die within 5 minutes because some creatures spawns out of left field, dashing in faster than I can sprint, and claws me alive in one hit while I can't break its DT. That or some guy decides to be awesome and consistently shoot me in the face while I'm still looking for him.. That or... okay, I can go on and on about how ridiculous some situations are in my game.

Edit: Good luck, and have fun to the folks taking part in this. I'll be watching from the sidelines.

With Goodspring vanishing behind her she can't but wonder why she helped those savages anyway. The town is nothing but a dirt trap she should have let it burn. However the Doc did help her, and the information about not heading north may have saved her life... "Well at least Primm is a proper town where I can get a room, and a bath." She thinks wistfully not knowing what she is about to walk into...

Figured I might as well give this a go, and I needed a person for OWB anyway.

If I remember the original thread we can die in DLCs? If not I think I will be skipping DM, or at least turning off hardcoe, and lowering the difficulty...

Well, since Junks made it the Vegas and has a luck of 10, he's off gambling at every place so he can make enough money to live a life of chem-filled leisure. Already has the high-roller suite at the tops and 12,000 caps, and I don't think he'd care much for helping the factions, so it looks like easy going from here on out.

I'm sure I'll find a way for him to finish the main quest though. He does have a Intelligence of 1, so House, Legion, or the NCR could trick him into working for them. Or he might think to take Vegas all for his chem-filled self.

We got another dead one.

This time, I died during fighting ants in the generator room in Nellis.

I found Thump-Thump recently and decided to test it on an some ants. I fired one shot at them and switched to spiked knuckles to finish one. I go for the other, then WTFBOOM I'm dead.

I think it was the grenade from Thump-Thump that caused it to explode. Or the game likes to screw with me. Either way, back to the drawing board.

Using Laser Weapons and Explosives are not recommended for use in that room.

Reason? Everything explodes. The ants, and if you shoot the missiles in the room, you'll auto-die.

Just lost my second man. Was trying to sneak past Sloan & the Quarry. Made it past the Quarry when i see a red blip at about 1 o'clock on my HUD. Bring up my hunting rifle & see its a deathclaw. I decide to engage the enemy, put 3 rounds into his head & hear a noise behind me. I spin around just in time to see another 4 of the buggers rip me a new one. Next toon is going to be a braindead tank i think.

Jonah almost ate dirt tonight. I have been patroling the outter vegas area in retribution for a fiend assault upon my arrival in vegas. After stumbling across driver, violletta, and cook-cook i was besett upon by a pair of scorpions, which led me to their apparent hideout (monte carlo). After me and boone (who is using the q-35 modulator) cleared the building I found a group of scorpions hiding behind a locked door. Thinking himself clever Jonah slipped the lock and proceeded to vats-lob a frag grenade at a scorpion. Unfortunately said scorpion chose to charge resulting in said grenade only traveling about 3 ft. I barely managed to survive (think fully crippled and two health) tabs left, thankfully boone made short work of the surivors whilst I downed consumables in an efffort to stay alive.

Jonah will do longer be using explosives indoors or at close range......
