In the DLC, more destruction spells please

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:59 pm

We've all seen topics about how destruction has issues in high-level play, with the number of spells that are actually useful dwindling until playing as a mage becomes an exercise in stun-locking frustration.

When the DLC hits, it's bound to contain some new weapons and armor, so I'm just hoping that we get some new spells as well, especially some much needed destruction spells.

Hopefully the poor state of destruction mages in Skyrim will get remedied by some high-level spells that both pack a damaging punch (without a crazy magicka cost that requires us to exploit enchanting) and provide some new options strategically.

I'm all for new spells, even new destruction spells...but they would likely still be underpowered and too costly without using exploits. What is really needed is a re balancing of destruction as a whole.

Yeah, but realistically I just don't see Beth making any sweeping changes. They could at least throw us a bone with a few new deadly, somewhat-affordable destruction spells.

Your probably right, but that would likely mean that destruction would be even more unbalanced than it already is.

Destruction needs its damage upped.... to a point where it matches the absurd costs... which then wouldn't have to be altered.
But as it is, it ought to be cheaper.
Either or.

New Destruction spells? Like what? A straight up Damage Health spell? Can't think of much else we could really utilise.

Do you mean by making other high-level destruction spells obsolete?

I could see that being a problem, but there are ways around it, whether by implementing new uses/effects with their own advantages and weaknesses, or simply tweaking the existing spells to compensate (although that again sounds like more work than Beth would do). Even in the worst case, I would rather have a few spells become useless than an entire school of magic be reliant on exploits.

Even upgraded versions of older spells like flames would be appreciated (say a blue flames spell that does more damage). Several entire spell effects simply lose their usefulness for high-level mages.

Which is where Destruction now stands, which is why I believe a complete re-balancing of that school is necessary. A destruction mage without exploits isn't very viable. In it's current state, destruction is best used with another school such as conjuration, leaving it as only a supplemental skill.
