The door to Cyrodill, is there anymore? What is it exactly?

I have discovered a door to Cyrodill. After I stopped playing Dead is Dead, I have made a new rule for myself. When I die, I must do a "Pennance Walk". Basically I follow the same path that we start in the begining of the game when we are on the cart heading towards Helgen. So I followed the road/path all the way and was surprised to see a fort/wall with a door in it. I walk towards it and you can't activate it. So I am guessing it's the border edge that leads to Cyrodill.

I am happy it's not a "You can't go no further" that you get else where on the map. So since this doesn't happen here, just a wall with a door, I wonder if this will be used in a future DLC like they had in Fallout New Vegas. Like Caves on the edge borders that lead into another land.

So for now, it's just a fort/wall with a door, what exactly is it? The location I am talking about is Stragiht south from Helgen. So if you follow the path and take all the right turns when you have a fork in the road or option to go left or right, stick to right. eventually after heading south then east then north a bit then south again, when you fianlly get there, it is exactly south of Helgan. When you look at the World Map it is between 2 mountians, a small path between them. So what would this be? An outpost? Well it's a deserted outpost since I don't see nobody around.

So are there other locations like this, or is this just the only one? I guess this is the area we were caught when trying to cross the border. (curious were we trying to get in or out? Hmmm....)

So what do you all guys and galls think?

It's a gate on a road. There's no reason to go past it.

It is a world border, it's just slightly more immersive than a message that says "You cannot go this way."

There are also doors to Morrowind, Hammerfell, and High Rock. It is theorized that they are paths to where future DLC will take place.

The fascinating nature of doors...

What's behind it? Where does it lead? I won't rest until I find out!

I was really disapointed when I was at the north of Skyrim and got the "you can't go no further" or climbing the mountians and got the same message. So I was happy to actually see these doors. Bethesda was actually thinking and maybe, just maybe saw my post asking them to be more creative than invisible walls. (ok I doubt they did that. :P)

Good to know there is other doors, will have to look for them when I am in the area. Thanks for letting me know Topster.

This. The entire Imperial Province of Cyrodill (In Oblivion) didn't have a single road going to the other provinces.

For PC versions there's a way to remove the border limit and allow you to explore beyond. Check out how on youtube there's plenty how-to guides if your interested.

The whole DLC thing has been blown way out of proportion. It's highly, highly unlikely.

There are a bunch of these gates, the best explanation is the one Topster gave, it's better than having an impassable mountain range when people are always telling you about traffic between the provinces.

Spoiler
I followed a guy today who features in the main quest. He ran up to the border with Morrowind and disappeared, escaping from Skyrim. That's the most use I have found for them.

I found an open gate like the one in Riverwood at the map edge and an you can not go this way message. West of Riften.

Agreed. Wishful thinking spirals into wild speculation pretty rapidly.

Why does everyone always think it's planned for a DLC? The reason it's there is because it makes a whole lot more sense for people to have some sort of pass in and out of the province than for it to be like Oblivion where the road just abruptly ends in the middle of it's logically expected route.
