The engagement part before getting married...

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 4:28 pm

SoOoOoo - I initiated the 'ol nuptial conversation with Lydia (I have a follower mod running) and now she's on my back nagging me allll the time about going see the Preacher, she can't wait, when are we gonna go see him yadda yadda, constantly and I just don't wanna get married yet! Jeez I wish she would just give it a rest I mean it's all she ever talks about anymore and she picks the most inappropriate times to bring it up -- can't it frikkin' wait at least till we're out of the dungeoun du jour?? I mean I'm tempted to go beg the Draugr to kill me and put me out of my misery here! Man you think you know someone, but when the M word comes up - look out!
So anyways, my question is - what is the point of no return in the Skyrim marriage scenario? I mean I guess we're engaged, but, well, there's kinda this other chick I met at the pub and I think I like her better, so how do I get off the hook with Lydia and still have a chance with this new babe??? Is there a way to call off the engagement? If I dismiss Lydia can I go ahead and pop the question to New Girl?

You could just murder Lydia in her sleep and then get married to the other girl or marry Lydia then murder her

I thought you couldn't remarry if your spouse dies?

I think you can stop the ceremony midway through, but I'm not sure how it afftects future marriage.

You can sto[p the ceramony at the Altar, and you can then Re-marry. However the person you ditch will hate you... forever.

If you stop the ceremony, you can later either make up with the jilted fiancee or tell them that you never loved them. That second option will let you get married to anyone else but them.

I've done it before, but I felt horrible, reloaded the save, and bit the bullet.

If you're just engaged but haven't set up the wedding with Maramal, I'm pretty sure you can get engaged to someone else and that new engagement will override the first with no broken feelings. (Tried it before to see if I could, uh, get multiple spouses. Sadly there was no hilarious fistfight to win my love. Just the last person I proposed to.)

Lucky bastard that you are, you play on PC. The almighty console codes likely have a solution for you.

I can't test it for you, as my graphics card is a dinosaur and would likely spontaneously combust if I attempted to play Skyrim - but I've lurked these forums long enough to learn a thing or two.

Have you tried removing her from the Marriage faction? Sadly, you'll likely have to add said barmaid to it to get those nuptials going.

If that doesn't help, try this. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Marriage

If you don't mind Lydia hating you while following you (which makes no sense, assuming she will still follow you after you break it off), then yes you can break it off at the altar.

Cool, seems easy enough - I guess I'll try this first - have Lydia wait in camp outside of town and make some excuse to go into town alone to see my girl. Hopefully that will work. I'm such a cad...*sigh*

Hating on me 24/7 would be at least as bad as her incessant nagging plus you never know if I'll "accidentally" get a sword through the chest in the heat of battle !

If you are on PC there are some mods that allow divorce. O_O

As a side note, the original post made me laugh. :3

Muiri, but to be honest I'm not sure it was a tavern where we met. I just know I was drunk on mead at the time.
