the game will not start at all

problem: others already mentioned this, but i couldnt find a solution online. the game simply wont start and gets stuck in a small black window that is not responding once i hit play on the launcher

phenom x2 3.1ghz
4 gig ram
ati hd5700 1gig ram
windows 7

1. installed the game from dvd, activated on steam and got the latest update.
2. tried starting the game, got the problem
3. tried solutions:

- validated game files
- set .exe on admin, set on compatibility for xp sp3
- updated drivers
- reinstalled game

also tried: deleting temp, defragmenting, installing again. the game simply wont start.
i also have zonealarm running (and turned it off). i tried disabling the steam ingame community. also reinstalled steam.

i left out the rest, but can also post full diag. i am looking into the codecs right now but cant see why that would cause a problem like this. codec should crash in game on during movies etc, but the game wont even run after i hit play on the launcher

IMO, if Fallout 3 wouldn't work, then Fallout NV almost certainly would not do so, either. I would think that getting the older game running first would have made more sense than abandoning it and trying to install FNV now.

Codec (DirectShow filters) can cause crashes at any time as has been shown in Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Can you post your full DxDiag and put it in spoiler tags.

NV also just stopped working on my sig rig,FO3 also did the same. I decided to reformat my HDD but I forgot to save my steam p/w and information and now I'm jumping through my butt trying to get it working.I've been working on this since yesterday so im.........

here is the thing: both fallout3 and oblivion have been working on this machine before, i only upgraded the graphics card. its a good point though. i will install f3 and see what happens.
what i dont understand is that i have seen others with the same problem (outside these forums as well), but some descriptions sounded like they were using pirate releases. i had a problem like this in CoH and a validity check via steam fixed it back then (i guess some files got corrupted). nothing i have tried on steam worked this time though.

There's something seriously wrong with DirectX and/or the codecs on your machine. There's DXfailure warning in your dxdiag post. Try reinstalling DX9, then reinstall DX11, then use the codec reset utility. Test the game, then we can try some more stuff.

that was just an old warning. it is not possible to install / reinstall directx 11 on windows 7 as it is part of the core. the new web installer checks the version and integrity and wont do anything if directx seems to be fine. besides, the warning is in directinput which is for keyboard, mouse etc only and should not be conflicting. mass effect 2, dragon age and starcraft 2 have all been just running fine.

still, i deleted the directx entries from the registry, restarted and found directx 10 in one of the games. did not fix the problem though.

deinstalled fallout, i am now downloading fallout3 nv via steam. maybe that works.

as to the codecs: people wrote that ffshow causes problems, but i fond have them on the system. maybe other codecs might cause trouble, too? will now delete all codecs and reinstall them

ADDITION:

to everyone doing a dxdiag - if you have any usb deviced connected to your computer, disconnect them. if you have unusual input devices (in my case: a wacom pad), disconnect them and deinstall them out of the device manager (installation takes only a few seconds when you use them). dxdiag may cause some problems otherwise. once all usb ports were free, dxdiag could complete without a failure notice in directinput. this did NOT solve my problem, but just in case you have to post your diagnosis results. it is one less suspect to worry about.

FOUND SOLUTION:

ok, updating drivers, directx etc did not do much. here is what worked in my case:
- delete game files on steam (r-click, properties)
- install game via steam (click install, it will download)
- the download took abour 12h, after that the game started right away.
- no problems, no crashes 6h into the game.

so, if codecs and drivers dont seem to be your problem but your game still wont start, try installing via steam download.
