The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:24 pm

Well...

I just got finished watching the GDC trailer ( yeah, a bit late ) and I can honestly say I've never been so disappointed after watching a gameplay trailer.

A Link to the Past is probably my favourite game ever, closely followed by Ocarina and Morrowind. Every Zelda game that Nintendo has released has satisfied my entertainment needs, and I can't ever remember not having great anticipations for a new release. This time however I'm almost saddened by how awkward and pathetic Skyward Sword looks.

Alright, so I haven't actually played it, but as a self proclaimed Zelda veteran I feel an urge to slam my fist on Miyamoto's desk and ask what the hell's going on. The entire game looks like an advert for the Wii mote. This really bothers me. I didn't like the Wii controller addition to Twilight Princess, but I managed to forget about it and found the game quite enjoyable. Skyward Sword however looks like it was built around the entire control. I hope I'm wrong.

Anyway, what's the general consensus on the gamesas Forums?

Optimistic?

Okay, now dont make fast assumptions, I never see the word "Nintendo" and the word "trouble" in the same sentence, so I dont ever think this going to happen

I like to save my judgement for a game until after I have played it.

It looks like the same Zelda gameplay since Ocarina of Time. Unless you're tired of the tried-and-true formula, I don't see the problem.

Hardly. This generation they've nearly sold twice as many consoles as both Sony and Microsoft combined, not to mention their continued domination in the handheld space.

I completely agree with you. I have very low expectations for Skyward Sword because of the Wii control scheme. It looks gimmicky and I don't like it at all.

Then you missed out. Twilight Princess was one of the top Zelda games easily. Its NEARLY better than Ocarina of Time. Nearly.

They always say that they are gonna go downhill, but I never see Nintendo doing a bad game for a long time

My family owns every nintendo system.

NES SNES and N64 were played to death, and brought back to life.

Gamecube and Wii collect dust.

Im coming off trollish though and hateraiding. Sorry. Its just that to me the Wii is a gimmick and I hate it.

The game informer issue is about how they have poor 3rd party support because of their odd formats. Nintendo lives and dies by Shigero Myiamoto that is no secret. However I will concede that Myiamoto IS THAT DAMN GOOD.

The only Nintendo game that I've played that I didn't like was Majora's Mask.

Yeah, I said Majora's Mask. Sue me.

I think the issue here isn't that the Wii is a gimmick, but that developers have not take advantage of it yet. Metroid Prime 3 feels SO PERFECT with the Wii-mote, and I'm someone who played the crap out of the first two Primes. The Wii only feels like a gimmick because, for the most part, that's all we've seen on it so far.

No, the main issue that the Wii has is that it has crap for third party games that are good, but yet it has no end of [censored] developers pushing shovelware onto the system to make a quick buck. Nintendo needs to get their act together and get some REAL developers to make some REAL games for their system. I'm tired of all the party games and sports games. I want good FPS games, good action games, good racing games, etc.

But I doubt we'll see those before the end of the Wii's lifespan.

Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were both highly successful and are currently the top-rated games in the series. Taking into account all of its spin-offs, Mario is as strong a brand as ever. As for Zelda, Spirit Tracks is probably the series' first stumble in quite some time, and even then it received decent reviews and sold well.

The games were there in small doses. The problem was that "hardcoe" gamers were turned off by the Wii's graphics, lack of online and the concept of the Wiimote. Third-party attempts didn't exactly fare well and most publishers either left the system behind with a bad taste in their mouth or opted to flood the system with shovelware. This is contrast to a lack of support in general on the Nintendo 64 and GCN.

Nintendo is in talks with third-parties for Project Cafe though. Rumors were that Rockstar was among the developers they were courting. They've also mentioned the possibility of contracting a third-party to create an online infrastructure that's more competitive than Nintendo's own attempts. Hopefully it means no more Friend Codes. <_<

Yes, because companies that post a net profit of $947 million are totally in trouble. Nintendo isn't looking as pretty as it did a year ago. That's clear. They're facing more competition in the hand-held market than ever before from smartphones. Their current console is so underpowered that it makes creating PS3, 360, Wii cross-overs basically impossible, which kills 3rd party development (Of course that's been Nintendo's MO forever). The Wii's ability to penetrate non-gaming markets has not helped it's software sales (and it would appear that those markets are rapidly reaching saturation in number of Wiis) and honestly I think it'd be hard to find gaming enthusiasts that are incredibly excited about a new Nintendo console. These are all problems, but Nintendo isn't on a one way march to nothingness.

I don't know how Nintendo thought that their online was even slightly competitive. If I can't click on a person's profile and friend request them after playing game with them, what the HELL is the point of online play? What's the point of having a Wii when I also need a computer (so we can trade friend codes) to play with others?

Not to mention its lags like mad. It was seriously around 1.5 seconds of delay on a good day, and my internet was running flawlessly.

Its funny that the Wii can outsell the competitors so hard, yet it will still probably be remembered as a terrible console, compared to its peers, just because their games were mostly crap. Of course, a console is just a shiny brick without good games.

From what I've heard it varies from game to game. Monster Hunter Tri's online is supposed to be pretty darn good, while I've heard mixed things about Smash Bros. Brawl and so on.

I haven't played a whole lot, but 3DS' online seems to work like a dream. No lag whatsoever in Street Fighter IV.

Shame about the Wii's legacy though. It was somewhat impressive for what it was, and I don't think anyone but Nintendo would have ever released hardware like that. Could have been so much more.

No, but they'll most likely make a few for Project Cafe. I'm assuming ports of older games and probably even Grand Theft Auto V.

Speaking of tired.. They could do something along http://kotaku.com/#!5798782/link-and-zelda-samurai-warriors lines. I've seen my fair share of terrible ideas for Zelda's future, but a Zelda game that takes place in feudal Japan? Sold.

The handhelds dont cause as much stir as releasing GTA on the "family system" would. At least I think it would raise eyebrows. Im pretty far out of the loop with Nintendo. The way they market just drives me crazy so I got off the bandwagon. Granted my PS3 has been hit hard recently.
Mostly Im talking out of my rear because I want a distraction from the fact I cant play MK2011 online.

Now something relevant to the OP. I think Skyward Sword looks decent, but I agree with you that its gimmicky and Im awaiting Nintendo to release "The Mastersword" attachment for the Wii controller. I envision it looking like the cheap wal mart light sabres but with a hole cut out to put the remote in.

I was honestly shocked they were making another one for the console. they were doing so much better on their portable system games. twilight princess really killed the series for me.
