I'm going to roleplay that they are but is there a chance that in canon they are?

A chance? I suppose so, by which I mean the canon leaves the possibility open (even if it is pretty unlikely; the Lone Wanderer is basically the hero of the entire DC Wasteland, so why would he come out to the Mojave alone to work as a courier?). But I highly doubt Obsidian would do that. All the main characters have been separate people so far, and that's likely the way it will always be.

While it would be a nifty twist, I don't think that is the case.

According to Fallout Wiki, they are nothing alike. They are not the same person nor are they related to each other in any which way in canon.

You can pretend they are, but in canon, they're two totally different people.
