The Lonesome Road

Post » Fri Jul 01, 2011 2:45 pm

I've basically assumed that the next DLC for NV "The Lonesome Road" will be the expansion that finally allows you to continue after the game ends (Equivalent to Broken Steel for F3). The DLC will bring the story of the courier to a full circle as you search for the original "courier six" who was meant to deliver the chip. Courier Six also known as Ulysses asks you to head to a nature ravaged area called The Divide and if you can complete his mission he will confess his secrets about why he refused to deliver the platinum chip.
Seeing how the chip was basically the main plot line in NV it only makes sense to me that the rest of the chips story could only happen after the couriers main story with the chip which of course ends at the dam.
My game of course has been stuck on the dam battle since for the first time in my life I got cursed with my savings (stupid overwrite).
So God willing come next month when the DLC is released on the 360, PS3, and PC we will see what NV has in store for us after the battle of the Dam......

The above marked is not going to happen. They already said there would be no "Broken Steel type DLC" (As in no continuing after B.A.T.H.D) .

Also, wrong subforum.

Good evening.

hmm, I hate to disappoint but 1) no add-ons will extend the game past the ending, merely add more stuff to do before you do the Final Battle, and 2) the next add-on to be released was Old World Blues which was due out in June but was pushed back to July which was originally supposed to be the month that the final add-on Lonesome Road, was due to launch, but considering the delay to July of OWB I forsee LR being pushed back to August :shakehead:

I can't wait to pal around with Ulysses and have a Legion companion for once :twirl:

Yup, Obsidian has confirmed several times that 'THERE WILL BE NO PLAY AFTER ENDING DLC!' Not least because every quest has an outcome shown in the ending and whats the point of doing the quests after the end if you aren't able to see an outcome?

Also, Old World blues was pushed back to next month, Lonesome Road to August at least.

Maybe we should make a sticky explaining that there's not going to be a game extending dlc, it might cut down on some of these threads that pop up almost every single day.

Well that's disappointing I guess a new game is in order for me, but I would have done quests without seeing an ending just like I did with Broken Steel. Fallout 3 also had it's story book like ending but that stopped no one from continuing past that ending with DLC. I assumed it would work out the same for NV, I personally hate the ending they choose. Why in the world would such a free-roam game have such a linear ending?

I would strongly disagree with your assessment. Telling you why he didn't want to deliver the chip in no way has to be done after the main plot ends at the damn. It could (story wise) easily fit in right after you talk to House for the 1st time and get all that info about Chip. Or many other places.

Why in the world would such a free-roam game have such a linear ending?

Games end.
Games with multiple endings, to continue playing, they'd have to do all kinds of extra stuff to turn the world into what you "created" by your chosen ending. Not going to happen.

Fallout New Vegas has ~180 different ending slides that post-end gameplay would have to adapt after. That is a bit more than what Fallout 3 had, I believe around 20 or less.

not to mention that FO3 only really had one way to beat the game, you helped the big giant robot and the white knight good guys fight their way to the big shiny machine. You kill as many demonized bad guys on your way there. You then activate the big shiny machine for the good of everyone or you spike the punch in the big shiny machine because the demonized bad guy asked you to.....in either case what happens before you activate the big shiny machine and what happens afterward are essentially the same thing

It's not going to happen cause no one pressures the developers to do it, we just accept what they make and they get money no matter what so why should they work hard, would you? So far I haven't seen one person defend the idea of actually going on in the game like you used to when we first learned the ending of NV, you've all just kinda accepted. So I don't blame Obsidian at all I would do a half fast job to if millions of people "didn't care" and would buy it anyways :S........... Just my opinion no one has to agree but I'll say what I believe to be true and I can't honestly accept that ending in NV. When Broken Steel came out I would have paid anything for it, I would have saved up 10 000 Microsoft points if necessary because it was worth it unlike these new DLC (Dead Money not there greatest work).

It's not just the main plot ending....all those quests you did, choices you made have effects so they'd have to account for that. Like, some companions might not be available. Some quests that you missed would probably be unavailable because they'd make no sense in the pre-ending world you created. Novac & all it's folk might be there, or it might not. It might be self-ruled, or overrun with Legion & everyone there dead. Way too many little things/possible combo of things to alter for the game world to make sense if you could continue playing.

And if they just let you continue without altering anything, ppl would complain that their actions made no difference on the world, or something. ;)
And in many cases, imo at least, the world would be pretty boring to continue playing in anyway. Nothing to do but kill the random respawning monsters here and there. Game's designed to be replayed and done several different ways in order to get/do all the content.

So basically you're saying that becuase a few people whine hard enough they should throw out all the work they did making multiple endings and a story that made more sense than Fallout 3?

Never told a lie, the description of the DLC is dead on, the only part I got wrong was continuing after the dam but I clearly said "I've basically assumed".

No I'm basically saying that instead of sending out a new random DLC every month with a couple of new missions, clothes/weapons/items , and perks, they should take a bit of time. Take a couple of months to slowly go through all the ending clips (this is a team not one guy it won't take forever) and at least attempt to make a world that changes to what your story ended as.

Picked House - Bots all over the wasteland/ new casino in NV/ most factions and settlements begin to talk a lot of house.
Picked NCR - NCR all over the wasteland/ NV turns into a giant HQ for the NCR/ NCR has control of a lot more territory
Helped Boomers - When you return the characters are gone from the airfield/ You can randomly see the plane flying around if you look up

There's three different possible clips for the endings and solutions how to put them in the game after the battle at the dam. And what some of you seem to forget is that a lot of these ending clips won't even work into the game if it continues on. Like your allies clips, why would that change in anyway just because of the game going past the battle? And there are many more like that making the number of things they would have to change much lower then you think.

1 - It may well be a team, but it wouldn't surprise me if that team was small. Happens a lot after release, that the team that continues the work on patches & other stuff shrinks by a lot. IIRC, at one point Diablo2's entire team consisted of...one person. Now, that's different because years had passed, not saying there's only one working on NV. But they do shrink. :) They do have other games that they move on to, and a lot of the "team" ends up being dedicated to new projects instead.

2 - to do all that after the game has already been released is probably not "profitable" in terms of hours spent, employee hours paid for, etc...while DLC's (I'm guessing) are. Or at least have a good chance of being so.

3 - if they wished, they could try to put such things into the game from the get-go, but then release would be delayed and often developers are on short time-leashes to begin with.

How are they random? There's an overarching story relating to Ulysees, you find a little bit more out. OWBs will supposedly feature recordings that fill in some of Christines interactions with Ulysees

Why should they? They've already said they won't do it and they'll have a lot more respect for sticking to their guns than bowing with the tears of everyone who wants to play after the end.

Seems kinda lazy and what about all the other variables from other quests? There's also four major endings just to correct you.

There's three different possible clips for the endings and solutions how to put them in the game after the battle at the dam

Theres a lot more than three.......

How are we gonna reach the next stage of gaming if this is the way we think, even are best developers just make the same old game because of these restrictions you've pointed out. Well it may sound childish and a little arrogant but I want to be shocked, mouth opened, drool coming out, when I see my games/DLC. So I can't accept these rules for a developer cause they just allow them to continuously pump out the same old game, new packaging (kinda like how NV felt when you popped it in the first time, just like a big DLC for F3)......

Actually, technically, more people want free roam than a finite ending. Not taking sides...just saying free roam is more popular and the devs knew that so they took a gamble by making a finite ending.

It's called....it's a business. It has to make money. So far in the "modern world", business has tended to be run in certain ways. You have employees who need to be paid (they aren't likely to work for you for nothing, tho there are exceptions). You have creditors that need to be paid and on and on. If you want things to change, you have to change those ways. But such changes come very very slowly, if at all, and many who buck the trend go broke and bankrupt in the end (unless they have tons of their own money - that is, not dependent on others for their funding).

I'm not trying to be negative - I'd certainly love many things about business & running a company to be different, and in a way that could still keep you in the black funding wise. It's very difficult however. Try running a business sometime, it's not easy to balance all those things/demands.

I'm not naive I understand that these are the many problems we have in the present day, but I do believe that as customers for there business why should we support them for a mediocre job. It's because we'll accept anything developers throw out at us that they begin to worry more about the business then the actual player and game.
