I think that "companies prefer to use" has not been true for a long time. How many games, external to id's franchises, were developed using idTech4? Prey and Brink are the only ones that I'm aware of (and even now both of those titles are under the ZeniMax/Bethesda umbrella). The lack of detail on the main id site about the tech is a conseqeuence of their move away from licencing the engines. I'm concerned by the total lack of information relating to a GPL release of idTech4 (specifially Doom 3); not even a general statement of policy on the subject following the sale to ZM.
Prey, that was such a great. I really hope they make a squeal.
I didn't realize there was such a short list of engine 4 games. Thanks for pointing it out. If you look at engine 3, there was at least 23 games that licensesed the technology. I guess 'Source" engine and "Unreal Engine 4" has taken a bite out of the market. Strange to think, considering both of these engines have their roots in ID Tech Engine 1. I thought ID Tech 5, being able to run on XP, VISTA, Mac, 360, PS3 was in a position to take back the market. I wonder what happened.
It's kind of funny to look back on, but when john first announced the shift to gamesas. The announcement was no major changes. Sense then the website has been gutted, id software is no longer a graphics engine company, rage publisher did change, the teaser site for rage was taken down, and the release date for rage was pushed back. I'm not complaining , as so much observing the shift. Some one really should put a big link on id software webpage that basically says go to bethblog.com.
