The Obligatory Quests End Chest

Post » Sat Nov 03, 2012 6:08 pm

I understand the purpose it serves.
Do you think it's unnecessary?
Have you been conditioned to look for it?
Are you relieved when you find it?
It it another form of hand holding?
Should they have simply left it out?
How could they have done it differently?

Please, let's cuss and discuss...

Cussing isn't aloud.
But to the issue...I don't mind it. It's treasure. It's gold, baubles, maybe a potion or two, and some armor that is inferior to what I'm wearing...
It's not a big deal to me is what I'm saying.

I cussing love loot chests. It lets me add to the stupidly large stockpile of jewels and jewelry I have hidden in that cabinet in Breezehome that is over 9000 times larger inside than out.

I probably shouldn't have told everyone where the stash is.

Is it necessary? No, but I'm used to loot being at the end of dungeons in pretty much every game I play so it doesn't bother me at all. that said if it got changed I wouldn't be too flustered. Some dungeons could even stand to have nothing of value at all.

Holy hell do I like them. They are damn awesome.

I really just look at them as chests with items in them. Could care less about them. They have things in them. Not like every other game, and even ones before the 360 was out, didn't have something similar.

I suppose it's just traditional. You may feel cheated without it, even though you are not if you get an ebony axe from that deathlord and a word wall, but the expectation is there from any other game. You get a big chest, or some cool drops from the big bad, and if they aren't there your expectations are crushed.
Slightly off topic, but I wish other chests had slightly different random lists dependent on lock difficulty. Master lock, 22 gold, iron gauntlets, now that''s being cheated.

Cussing isn't aloud.

Then you haven't heard some people in my family when they are building furniture packages, that is very loud :hehe: (And yes, i realize you meant "allowed").

On topic, they are a bit too obvious. Like the "cleared" text, they make it too obvious that you're playing a dungeon crawler  Still dungeon without one isn't too nice

I'm of the opinion that a little variety wouldn't have hurt. Like more specific to the dungeon type. A special type of chest for Dwemer ruins, Bandit lair...et al...&tc.

As one example, how many people were chuffed that the reaper in the Soul Cairn didn't drop anything of note?

It'd be awesome if one time the chest was full of broken crap lol.

It's good.

99% is likely to become vendor trash (or raw materials if it's a new enchantment.) But... let's be honest here. Unless the next thing to happen is the Game Over Screen, you'd expect at least some token of appreciation or material reward for beating the tar out of a difficult badguy or at the end of a difficult quest.

Unless it's explicitly stated that the whole point is for revenge. Then the reward is to pummel the badguy so far into the ground that the Hell doesn't have to travel so far to collect their soul... unless you have a nice grand/black soulgem with you. Then it's a nice thing to put on your mantlepeice, with the souls of everyone else who made the mistake of making you angry.

I REALLY love finding those end-quest/dungeon chests! It just gives a great feeling of finishing off an adventure and getting a tasty reward for it! ^_^

I think it makes sense in some circumstances. I can picture, say, a Dragon Priest in Skyrim or Mannimarco in Oblivion standing guard over something that he considers to be precious to him. But when they show up in nearly every dungeon with monotonous regularity it just reminds me that I'm playing a game.

I suppose it's the monotonous regularity that gets to me a bit. When I encounter one, I begin wondering where the circular level design is going to cleverly deposit me near someplace close to the entrance.
I would have much rather known that there is 'congratulatory' loot someplace hidden. You know it's there someplace and you have to find it. A boss it seems would have the need or desire to hide it, but rest assured, it's there somewhere...in a corner of the dungeon, in a hollow rock, in a decrepit tree trunk, in an out of the way sack....anyplace but a uniformly identifiable chest.
I'm not wanting to sound like I'm complaining, but it is something that is so common, it does remind you that you are playing a game...I wouldn't go as far to say "It breaks my immersion" but something very close to it.

Well, some dungeons have a secret boss chest too, many have hidden lower level chests. But level scaling sure takes the fun out of finding them :hehe:

Now I can't stop thinking of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

"I got an Ebony shield!"
"I got a Daedric warhammer!"
"I got a Dragonscale helmet!"

*slow pan over to a disgusted Dovahkiin*

"I got a rock."
