The obvious game that noone has made.

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:37 pm

So we have those FPS games and I enjoy those, but I think it would be really epic to have a melee combat game.

Think about those epic fights scenes in movies like 300, Braveheart, Troy, LOTR, ect.

I love those big battle scenes and I dont know why a game hasnt been made based on that kind of warfare.

Ideas for how it might work:

Im thinking Team Deathmatch and you will start with base stats something like:

Attack-50
Speed-50
Parry-50
Defense-50

You would start with a balanced Sword, shield, and chainmale then as you played through the online you could unlock daggers, warhammers, ect. as you leveled up like in COD. The diferent weapons would modify your stats bigger weapons and armor raising power and defence lowering speed and Parry, and ligher armors and weapons doing the opposite.

The next thing it would need is realistic limb damage and hit detection so that you could cripple opponents and such and give the game a strategic approach.

It could feature diferent races and stuff too, you could always modify your fighter.

Think about how cool team action could be with all that going.

This idea seems simple, fun, and obvious, but I dont seen any developers trying it or anything close to it. Would anyone else like to play something like this or talk about ideas for how it could work?

Seriously, I'm pretty sure I've seen something like that.

Oh yeah - Oblivion.

Realistic hit detection and damage is a hard one...

Bushido Blade had that but it wasn't first person.

What I was thinking of was closer to a Call of Duty style presentation. Its hard for me to put into words whats in my head right now as Im a bit sleepy, but Ill try it tommorow.

Third person could work too.

The big diference between those games and what Im talking about is that I Oblivion is an RPG and I want more of a straight forward FPS style. Simpler in other words. '

Let me organize my thoughts and tommorrow Ill write up a better description of what I mean.

Does Dark Messiah count? I would guess that Project Offset was meant to be this type of game, as well.

The Batman: Arkham Asylum game features a fair amount of hand-to-hand combat, but it's 3rd person.

Funnily enough, Elder Scrolls: Arena was envisaged as just such a game, but then they started thinking, "wouldn't it be cool if you could go outside the arena to nearby towns and cities?" and it grew from there.

Zeno Clash is the best implementation of First Person Melee that I've seen, great game and one fantastic looking world. If they ever wanted to take the basic concepts and make a free roaming game out of it, I'd fund the project myself.

Fun fact; The team working on Project Offset left Intel and formed fractiv, they are currently working on an action RPG western game. It's lookin pretty good so far.

I think most devs realize that melee combat from a first person perspective doesn't work very well. Even in Oblivion it feels really awkward although you do get used to it. The best melee combat I've seen was in the Jedi Knight series, which was a combination of a first person shooter and a third person melee fighter. You just can't get that kind of combat from a first person perspective.

People actually said Oblivion? I think the OP means a game that has more than 5 enemies on screen at once...maybe thats what he means?....but I would like to see a game like Rome or Medieval Total War but through the eyes of a single soldier in those huge battles, or if you want more of a CoD style FPMC (not sure why you would) I would say the multiplayer on Messiah, I played the demo, it was alright but I think the game died on consoles a while ago....

There is only 1 "active" server now. About 12 people still play.

When they succeeded, yeah. But I think the game would've been better without it. Just run! :bolt:
